I have not personally known anyone who tried to use it, but I have heard of people. I do know that if they take the time to investigate, (and during wartime, believe me, they take the time) they will try to disprove you by challenging your belief systems and prior actions. In example, if you say you are opposed to violence against suspected civilians, they will actually have have testimony from those who have witnessed you play video games like Grand Theft Auto or whatever. If you go against the grain and tick off the wrong people they can and will, be on your butt like white on rice.
Interesting tidbit: Soldiers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) covers deaths by wars, hostile action, natural disasters, pretty much everything that normal companies won't (hence the name.) Without a doubt the policy is an absolute necessity for any military family. BUT it will not pay off any death of a service member who has announced him/herself to be a conscientious objector.
How is that for an unspoken message?
Lesson: You want to get out of the military, be gay AND be prepared to prove your homosexuality (depending on your Unit Command.)
It's called SAM: Statement Act Marriage
(Except statement to a CO isn't really enough anymore, as you can imagine several heterosexuals have attempted to get out with an Honorable Discharge pretending to be something they aren't.)
The shame is how many good soldiers there are out there who have to hide themselves in order to do something they love. I suppose I understand why you would not put a gay man in the infantry (to protect him from those cavemen that are so prevalent in that MOS.)
Thinking back, the only 'bad' thing or real rule I ever broke was being a beard for friends who needed it...and I'd do it again. In a heartbeat.

I happened to remember last night that Chaplains are not involved in fighting. They are officers and are trained on the use of weaponry, but do not actually carry a firearm. They are assigned a Chaplain's assistant who carries a 9mm and is tasked with protecting the Chaplain first and foremost, but they do not fight.
I suppose this would be the closest thing to a militarily acceptable conscientious objector. I always appreciated the fact that, while most were Christian, they learned all major religions and quite few minor ones, in order to accommodate each and every troop.
I wouldn't go so far as to say all Chaplains are saints, but many have beautiful souls.

and on a related note: what did Reagan do to *** off all of the little Punk kids? I wasn't ....born while he was in office, but I learned nothing about him that would make me equate him to Hitler or Satan like I've seen on some rather clever t-shirts.... So come on you old people enlighten me por favor.
18-40 (?) for young republicans huh. can I join? I meet the basic requirement of age, though I think I registered to vote as a pacific islander-greenparty. (I'm not kidding on that part, but this old lady said I was breaking the law and I should be more serious. lol I find that the closer to death old people get the less they find things funny- like this one time I volenteered to make candy for a church fund-raiser and I dropped the spoon in the chocolate and joked about selling it- you should have heard to ***-fit they threw about my maturity...old people are a plague upon the living)
