Also, I should add - my son's Cub Scout pack will be selling Christmas trees this Sunday (11/25) in Waynesboro at the Kmart parking lot all day - and also on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (26th-28th) in Hagerstown at the WalMart parking lot from 6pm-10pm each evening.
They get their trees from a local grower who cuts them fresh before the sale.
Come support the Cub Scouts! |

Heckmans do a great job. Will shake the needles out, drill it for a stand and wrap it. Alsways have hot chocolate and cookies. Not sure if they still have the Reindeer. Kids use to love it...
Located atop Air Hill, North of Loaferkenny. Off 997 turn right at the sign on top of the hill. |

I just got a mailing from Spring Rise. They look like they have a good selection, plus the option of delivery is nice. Return this postcard with a canned food item and receive a discount
They look pricey, but I'm biased since I've been relying on the same $30 fake tree since 2000!
I like the idea of tree farms too, or cutting your own tree. When we go to MI we walk out in the snow pick a tree, cut it down and they drag it back with the plow. It is a neat idea...unless you're standing in the middle of a frozen field after walking through piles of snow and waiting while one or two people hacks down a tree...It's COLD. Hay rides and hot chocolate sound delightful, though!
And supporting the Boy Scouts...How can you NOT support the Boy Scouts? Of course, I'd rather support them by buying their white chocolate covered popcorn MMMM Boy scout popcorn... Gah! back to the trees
I love the smells of greenery...I just hate the cleanup. And with three indoor cats and two dogs (one of which can destroy anything with her "tail of death") I'm just not sure if I want to risk it.
Any suggestions?
I always liked the idea of buying the little trees or even the 5 and 6 footers with root balls and then planting them in the yard. You hardly ever find those places anymore...I guess because, like me, not alot of people have enough property.
Decisions, Decisions.
Thanks for the info people.
Anonymouse,
My son is harping on me because he hasn't been in the Scouts since we moved here. How did you decide which troop to put your son in? >Cries< There are so many choices around here...what are the differences? Seriously, I look at the list and get all confused and my head starts to hurt...I don't even know which Ward I'm in, how am I supposed to know which troop to put my kid in?! _________________ Nevermind. |

I can think of several hundred different ways. I hate the Boy Scouts. And I'm not even one of the many scouts who were molested by their scout leader. |

Okay, I'll give you that. In fact, in light of that and other cases, especially considering the discrimination of gays, what I said was pretty doggone stupid.
I guess I had started to see them through my son's eyes. He enjoys Boy Scouts, (actually Cub Scouts at the time) and the other parents enjoyed being there, I even enjoyed it, mostly (I hate crowds and we met in some pretty cramped rooms). We had fun picking up trash and doing other community services. We still walk around picking up litter and we have discussions in regards to community service and such, but I have to admit, it is easier to do those types of things when you're part of a group. He baked and decorated a cake, he had a blast with the pinecar derbys...I feel guilt for keeping him out. _________________ Nevermind. |

Well, since you put it that way, i guess I can let it slide. I still wouldn't feel comfortable supporting that organization but I'm well aware that individually, it can be a nice activity. I was a Boy Scout and it wasn't a bad experience; I'm just glad I didn't have one of those dads who made me be an Eagle Scout.
Good for the United Way though for not supporting a discriminatory organization. |

Like you, I had a lot of skepticism about the Scouts when my boy asked to join. We went together to hear what they had to say and the guys running his pack seemed to be exactly the kind of people who should be involved in scouts - their own boys were in and their #1 committment is always the best interest of the boys. Over the last year I've seen these guys really invest themselves in the lives of some boys who obviously don't have very great homelives - teaching them skills and giving them self-confidence through achievement.
The first badge my son had to earn was the "Bobcat" which he had to complete with his parent. It was all about protection from abuse. I had to talk to him about talking to strangers, good touch/bad touch, never going into someone else's house or car without asking me first, etc. And when the boys go camping, no boy is allowed to be in a tent with any adult who is not his parent, and the leaders can't have anyone in their tents except their own kids.
I don't know what goes on in Boy Scouts, but the Cub Scouts are definitely keeping themselves above suspicion on the sexual abuse thing. |

It proves that a national organization like this is only as good as its local chapters; that pretty much applies to any organization that operates in this way.
Still, I'd have a hard time supporting an organization whose leaders are blatantly discriminatory. |

Yeah, I hear you. It's a different thing when your 6 or 7 year old boy is looking at you with his sad eyes because he wants to build a pinewood derby car and shoot a bow and arrow. It's hard to explain to him the bigotry of the national organization based on sexual orientation when he just wants to go camping with his buddies. All that matters at that point is the local pack and whether they will help enrich his young life. |

Ahh, my dear AnonyMouse!
Always the eloquent one.
BTW, to any who care...I was vetoed on the fresh tree idea...Somebody in my house who grew up on 40 wooded acres doesn't think we should pay for a tree, since Somebody never had to before...

Try the place on Route 75 south of Mercersburg. I forget the name. I think it is where you turn (right) to go to Two Tops.
They have a good selection where you pick your tree & they cut it for you.
Stop by the shed & see the gentleman who takes care of several Bonsai trees. They are great.
Oh, if you get there before me, DON'T PICK THE TREE I WANT!!!!!!! |

Me, Springrise has the Frasier Firs. They just got their trees in the other day - all Douglas, Canaan and Frasiers. Beautiful and the prices are great. I'd check it out if I were you. _________________ The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands. ~Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923 |

| We got our tree from a house on Catherine Street (766 East Cathirine, I believe). They grow their own. Not a huge selection, but the price was right...$25. Through the week I believe they are "open" from 2-7pm. Some weekend hours. Good people. |
