|
|
For the past several months, I've been having a glitch with posting Haloscan comments on PO articles.
Often, when I load a page to a news story, there are no links to comments. Everything else works fine, but there's no comments link! So, I'll hit back and forward on the browser; still not there. I've found that if I hit refresh a bunch of time so that the page doesn't load the "cache" but rather completely refreshes, the comments link shows up. I'm not even sure if that's what the technical reason is... despite the fact that I'm well-acquainted with information technology.
OK, so I use Firefox; I know that some websites don't jive well with the "alternative browser" users (despite Firefox's superiority in every way) but I have found the same problem occurs while using IE7. To add to this, I've had this problem on different computers!
So, I have to ask; is anyone else experiencing this Haloscan "glitch?" Or is my computer trying to tell me something? |

| That same thing happens to me all the time - with Firefox and IE7 and on different computers. I think it's a Haloscan issue. I seem to remember the PO staff saying at some point that they were working on it or were looking at making a change. |

Sometimes it works right away; sometimes it doesn't. I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with my browser's cache since it happens when I view articles I haven't read before but I think I know when the comments link will show up.
If I hit refresh, and the page refreshes right away, the links still won't be there. I've found that if I hit refresh several times, it takes longer to load and if it gets "stuck" for a couple of seconds, it loads with the comments link.
I can't really compare it to anything since I haven't seen it before. I'm not sure if the Haloscan comments are completely independent from the actual news story page. I do have the theory that the PO writers "recycle" pages that had previously been used for stories and simply write (or copy/paste) new stories on top of them. Despite this, the Haloscan comments, being independent from the story page are "cached" on the PO website itself with the old page used to write the new story.
So, in my estimation, a solution would be to create a new page on the PO website template for writing stories rather than recycling old ones. This might also lead to the completely user unfriendly "search" and "archive" features. If you're looking for a story older than one week... good luck. |

| seems like it isn't working at all today. I want to see the comments on the snow story and it will not come up. I have refreshed 25 + times! |

I was just logging in to say the same thing. Maybe it's off-line because they are upgrading. |

Haloscan is down. We have logged a Help Ticket at the corporate level. Unfortunately it is not an issue that we can resolve locally.
In the next few weeks we will be switching to another commenting tool (probably Topix). |

Boy I sure did yesterday when I tried (in vain) to comment on several stories yesterday.
Here, I thought I was the only one having troubles with the mean 'ole Haloscan! My back button and refresher are going to miss me. |

Never mind...it seems to be working perfectly today. Funny how that happens, soon as you turn is a ticket, take a car with a wierd noise to the service center, or take a very sick kid to the doctor's, everything is absolutely wonderful. (Especially those rotten kids who puked, hacked, had soaring temps all night. Soon as you scream and yell just to get an appointment, and you walk in the doorway, they are doing cartwheels, wanting candy, temp is back to normal...PARENTHOOD, LOVE IT OR LOVE IT!) |
