The Scotland mall sucks! How did they ever get the mane of Chambersburg?
I went to the "mall" last week looking for a pair of patent leather shoes for my daughter. I tried Bon ton, Pennys,Shoe dept, Value City, payless and sears. Where do you think I could locate a pair.........SEARS!!
I hope when Bullington comes it brings the baby depot with it! Finding Infants shoes are soo hard around here. This is why I normally order them online but needed them for Friday.
Maybe I should of spent the extra gas money and went to the Valley Mall. |

at least borders/barnes and noble has bukowski. one of my personal favs. |

The problem is Green Township, plain and simple. They have no interest in development at all, but that's where the mall is so it will just continue to shrivel up and die. You would think they'd be pulling in some decent tax revenue from a fully-functioning mall, too. |
i actually think you're more or less right...rumour had it that the planning commission didn't see the sense in building on to the bridge because they didn't think that that much traffic would go to the mall...um.....HELLO?! how much of a pain in the butt is it to go on 997 from rt. 11 and wait thru those horribly timed lights?
ugh!
you'd think that they'd want to make money, not lose it......
maybe we should get slots into the area to make money....lolz.... |

Or even just to get to 81 South. It's a remarkable pain. |

Whoa! Movie theaters and IMAX's! You people think BIG!
Too big... for any Franklin County resident, commissioner, mover or shaker to ever even consider. Tell me, why would a movie theater open in this area? If you think about it, there's already a movie theater. Second, it doesn't make sense to open up that isn't near a mall or a very busy shopping area (busier than the Target center at least). Plus, prices would be higher and frankly, I'm not sure people would be willing to spend it.
Nope, we're doomed to driving all the way to Hagerstown just for stadium seating and a movie theater where you can't hear the movies playing next to yours. The Chambersburg Mall (despite being in "Scotland" is, in fact, in Green Twnshp which is part of Chambersburg) is nothing but a waste of space. You'd never think that's part of Chambersburg, but that's because Green Township likes it that way. I'd LOVE to hear the justification for even building it in the firstplace. I'm sure in 1978 it was THE place to be, but now, it's nothing but a testament to Franklin County's backward lifestyle.
And to think, with how many people live in this area, plus Shippensburg Univ. you would think that businesses may be persuaded to open. But the fact is, there is no motivation to open here. Many places offer tax incentives to new business, at least make liquor licenses available and cater to a relatively middle class clientele that actually does something other than hunting a fishing for entertainment. Nope, not around here; and even if the people want it and will use it, the power of be will deny it.
As for IMAX, the only reason there's one in Harrisburg is because it was part of the entertainment grant provided to the Whitaker Center. This is a museum, performing arts center and IMAX in one. Nothing like that could ever be successful around here; people are pissed off about a $4 library tax so anything remotely cultural or catering to knowledge or performing arts would ever be granted. Combine that with a predominantly geriatric population, and you have absolutely no chance for anything modern to be built. Harrisburg also has a night life; you know, places that are open after 9 PM where you can get a drink or bite to eat. A social scene... yeah, can you imagine downtown Chambersburg crowded with relatively rowdy night-lifers at 2 in the morning?
Yeah, it's a bummer. |

This seems like as good a time as any to maybe see if there's anything WE can do about the sorry state of the Chambersburg Mall. The mall is owned by the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust Company (PREIT).
PREIT owns a lot of the malls in the Central PA, Cumberland Valley and the surrounding areas. This includes the Valley Mall in Hagerstown and the Capital City Mall in Camp Hill, both of which have been considerably improved over the past several years. Yet the Chambersburg Mall is in constant decline. What needs to be done for someone to make an investment?
PREIT's slogan is "Innovation is our catalyst." Why can't we get some of that here? Because we're nothing but a bunch of country rube's?
One of the biggest differences though between Chambersburg Mall and the others around the area is that there is nothing around C'burg Mall and the traffic situation is awful. But can anything be done about it? Should we petition PREIT to re-invest in our craphole mall? |
