deerhoof is too unlistenable. if i want to listen to something unlistenable, I'll listen to the magnetic fields, because it's witty. |

Why do you need help? Having trouble counting 9/8
Seriously tho, old or new prog rock? I've been listening to prog rock a long time...Yes, ELP, King Crimson and early Gensis when their new releases were on vinyl.
The last prog rock band that I thought was original and enjoyed listened to was Dream Theater. Aside from excellent musicianship from all the players, the keyboard work from Kevin Moore on the early stuff and Jordan Rudess on the later releases is awesome.
Recently I've listened to Avenged Sevenfold but, that is a meld of prog rock/death metal and a bit different.
Help me with some newer original prog rock bands please.
Prog rock is not my favorite thing to listen to but at least it is challenging but...I can only listen to it when my wife is out of the house _________________ I don't know, whadda you think? |

so what exactly constitutes 'prog rock'??? (besides the aforementioned) |

Lately, I've been listening to The Mars Volta and Umphrey's McGee.
TMV is more of your standard hard prog concept rock, while Umphrey's basically applies prog trademarks to your standard bouncy hippie songwriting. Umprehy's also toured with Adrian Belew and Mike Kenealey for a while, as I recall...
Anyway, both are amazing bands, and doing a fine job carrying torch. But they're about all I know of from a new band perspective. (If you have iTunes, you can get a whole boatload of free Umphrey's podcasts, which is how I got into them...)
And yeah, 9/8 is a PITA... _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

LOL, I'm talking about Gensis when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer before Phil took over.
Good question tho..."what is prog rock"
Here's my 2 cents:
Many moons ago (before shopping was allowed on Sundays in Franklin County) it was called orchestral rock. Classically trained musicians utilized the standard rock band format of drums, keys, bass, guitar and vocals to meld rock sounds with a classical music structure of melody and recurring themes and different musical movements.
Another genre developing at the time was fussion. This music was created by players trained in jazz but again utilizing a standard rock band format and instrumentation.
The virtuosity of these players was incredible especially compared to the rock players of the era (although some of these rock players were classically trained as well...Jon Lord, the keyboard player for Deep Purple for example) of the late 60's and early 70's.
When orchestral rock and fussion finally came together, progressive rock was born. Today, as exhibited by a few replies to this thread, the definition of prog rock is all over the place.
Some of this music is NOT pleasant to listen to especially when the goal is to see (hear) how many notes can be jammed into a 4 beat measure but, when it is crafted with artistic vision and delivered with unequaled performance, it is awesome.
FWIW, I am only allowed to listen to this stuff when my wife is away from the house But that's fine because I can also test the absolute limit of my stereo system too. _________________ I don't know, whadda you think? |

I have the latest mars volta cd and would not define it as prog rock. I would describe it as Indie/Alternative rock but, music genre definitions have become so skewed who knows. _________________ I don't know, whadda you think? |

awesome description...and now i'm totally understanding
ugh. deep purple and rush. i swear i almost get hives just thinking about them.... we drove alllllllll the way out west once and he put it in and after like 15 minutes i'm like, dude....you will HAVE to play something else or you're walking back to PA ... the only middle ground we could find was meatloaf...so it was all we listened to for days. i still like the loaf. but the other two....ugh....
ROFL!!
i, too, love to test the limits of my stereo...esp in my car. i love to sing as loud as i can to very loud music....(thump thump indie rock loud! no rap thump! just indie baby!) |
