Ooh, you gave me shivers!

But really, that effect is what I'm most worried about, that people will just tune out. I know I'm tempted already.

Must...resist!

I've lost track. Has anyone posted this yet?

I actually found it kind of inspiring.

Also, there's a McCain version:

I was less inspired.

See. I just want to see what happens when a man picks out the china pattern, decorates the White House and plans and hosts the parties. Very Happy

From now on, I'm just going to pick candidates by what I think of their spouses.

Hmmm. Bitchy, Old, let's her husband brag about eating roadkilled squirrel and thinks they were clever turning in a trailer into the Governor's 'Mansion'.
Decision made, I'm done.

Hello ya'll. Been lurkin' for awhile and decided to finally speak up. Howdy.

About your post, .45chel, I could not agree more. Obama is nothin' more than the flavor of the month. It's unfortunate but in this day and age, electability is based on how likeable you are, if you're hot, etc. - not what you know and how you would perform on the job. It's a sad commentary.

Good to hear from you, Unbiased. Glad you've decided to participate.

Your post reminded me about an interesting article on the topic of how voters make their decisions. It was in last week's Newsweek called "When It's Head versus Heart, the Heart Wins." Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
With these and countless other instances of voters following their guts, the debate about whether the electorate is guided by its head or its heart, by reason or emotion, is over. "More important than what people think is how they feel," says Luntz, a view expressed by almost every expert NEWSWEEK interviewed. That doesn't mean voters don't care about Obama's war vote or McCain's support for the Iraqi surge. They do—but not because they have made a coldly rational calculation of how those positions would affect them. Instead, voters evaluate how a position makes them feel. To a struggling ranch hand in Wyoming, it may well feel right to vote for a candidate who opposes gun control even if the candidate also favors tax breaks for the wealthy—even though, from a purely utilitarian standpoint, a candidate who wants to raise taxes on the rich is the more rational choice.

Here's the link: http://www.newsweek.com/id/107601

I've always suspected that most people vote based "likability" rather than on issues, even though we can all point to the issues that we like about our candidate. And when I reflect honestly, I think I probably have picked candidates based on my gut then used their policies to support my decision intellectually. Sorry for being part of the problem. Confused

Recognizing you have a problem is the first step. Laughing

You could never be a problem, 'Mouse. Wink

Most likely.

Obama will probably pick some old white guy to balance the ticket.

Come to think of it, Clinton probably will too.

More importantly, I have to figure out what I'm going to pay attention to now to keep fromhaving a life.

Is it a problem? Really?

I'm not sure. Candidates say all kinds of things (or nothing at all, to the extent they can) to get elected. But what they do once they get there is often an entirely different matter. Candidates know they can say anything and do the complete opposite once in office because if there's one thing 42 proved, it's that we'll never impeach another president again.

So is relying on policy statements any more reliable than relying on your (media filtered) judgment of character?
