Not a defense, but I don't believe pedestrian traffic is allowed on the interstate.

I-81 accident kills 1
Staff report

A 20-year-old Carlisle man died Thursday evening when he was struck by a car while he and a passenger were changing a tire on their car on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 81 in the area of mile marker 18 in Greene Township.

Logan M. Norris, 20, was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:54 p.m., according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg, said Norris and Richard Anthony Schnitzler Jr., 22, Shippensburg, were changing the tire on the left berm of the southbound lanes at 5:19 p.m. when a 2000 Chevrolet driven by Anthony Charles Kratochvil, 20, Waynesboro, struck the 2000 Plymouth that had the flat tire. Police said Kratochvil had been southbound in the left lane and his car left the highway before striking the Plymouth.

Conner said Norris and Schnitzler were working on the right front tire and Norris, who had been the driver, was pinned under the car.

Police said Schnitzler suffered major injuries and was flown to a hospital. Information on his condition was not immediately available.

Kratochvil suffered a minor injury, police said.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Franklin, New Franklin and Fayetteville fire companies.

The interstate was closed to all southbound traffic between exits 17 and 20 and traffic was rerouted onto Pa. 997 and U.S. 11 while police investigated and emergency crews removed debris. The southbound lanes were reopened to traffic around 9:45 p.m.

Yeah, but this car left the highway before hitting the victim... he could have been going under the speed limit for all we know. He may have been speeding, or he may have been drunk or high, or maybe he was sleepy. There's a lot of things that cause dangerous situations on the highway... like that kid who was driving southbound in the northbound lane last weekend.

I was a witness to that unfolding. Yikes.

I know, I'm getting old, because I don't see the point in texting most of the time. You're typing on a phone...Why can't you just call the person?
