Farmers market to open near Penn National in Guilford Township
By MARCUS RAUHUT Staff writer

When new residents move to the Penn National community, one of the first questions they typically ask is, "Where is the nearest grocery store?"

Patti Nitterhouse, vice president of White Rock Inc., developers of Penn National, said that with a new farmers market opening this week, local residents will not have to travel as far for fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Penn National Farmers Market opens at 2 p.m. Thursday.

In addition to fresh, locally grown vegetables and seasonal fruits and berries, vendors will sell baked goods, gourmet cheeses, sauces, homemade soups and locally raised meats.

"We are going to have what one local grower ordinarily takes to Washington, D.C., to sell right here in our own back yard," Nitterhouse said.

Nitterhouse said the market will initially begin with a dozen vendors, but she said additional producers may be added in the future.

The farmers market will primarily serve the roughly 1,100 families that live in the Penn National community, but is open to everyone in the area.

Nitterhouse said there were a number of factors that led to the creation of the new farmers market -- concerns about the global environment, the rising cost of transporting produce, and growth of the interest in organically grown food.

She said there is also a growing awareness of where food comes from, and the market allows customers to "get to know the person who actually grew the cantaloupe."

Farm at Lowry's Glen, a farm on the edge of Penn National, and he is an experienced producer of naturally grazed Aberdeen cattle and sheep. Nitterhouse said he was instrumental in getting the market started.

The Penn National Farmers Market is at Orchard Road and Anthony Highway (Pa. 997) about one mile north of Mont Alto and shares the same parking lot with Penn National's Golf Center.

The market will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays through the end of the growing season.

Former Waynesboro Downtown Manager Carole Malin will serve as market manager.

Thursdays 2-6pm-- yet another thing in Chambersburg that has been made completely unavailable to regular, normal working hours people. I'd love to go to a farmer's market... on Saturday. Thursdays from 2-6pm is not any sort of convenience if you're under retirement age. From downtown businesses, to the Capitol Theater, and now this... Chambersburg is not very working-family friendly.

And it's too bad; with all of the fresh produce grown locally and all that a true farmer's market could offer to our area, I guess it just doesn't make sense financially.... Jim's is ok, but it's far from a true farmer's market experience. Why wouldn't local farmers go to Baltmore or DC where people will actually buy their produce from huge markets that attract hundreds of people?

Crazy how they get fresher produce than we do Confused
