Jeez, Coppy, I'm not intentionally following you around, I promise!
I was just wanting to add that though this board is titled Chambersburg Peeves all we have is a few traffic disagreements...This is GREAT!
There is hope for us all!

OK, OK, that's a good point; there are way more peeves in C-Burg than just traffic. Some have been touched on, some not so much.
Like the mall of course; we can have thread dedicated solely to that disaster.
The repressive opposition to necessary development in the area, not to mention irresponsible and even non-existent zoning.
The amazing lack of just things to do, in general, considering the local population.
The dreadful state of the downtown area.
The constant bickering between the Volunteer Fire Departments; I really don't even want to go there.
Dining; in general. Thankfully there's a place to vent on that in the inappropriately titled "Cuisine" section.
That gigantic Exxon sign on Rt 30 despite the fact that the Exxon station there was demolished years ago. The Shoney's sign too.
Also, the sheer number of empty lots and abandoned buildings along Route 30, particularly east of town.
Noisy, all-night religious festivals at Trojan Stadium.
"Closed on Sunday.... and Saturday. And some Mondays. Sometimes Tuesdays. All other days, 10 AM - 3 PM"
Whining about taxes
Nowhere to get a --good-- beer.
Single-issue-voters
Domestic violence, "bad" neighborhoods, underfunded schools/libraries, trailer parks built in flood plains
Median age: 40
The Chambersburg Wal-Mart, in general, but more specifically, the parking lot.
Relatively speaking: high housing costs/low wages
We complain because maybe, just maybe it might mean a positive change someday... right? |

This is the only post in this thread that I've read, but I agree with almost all of them.
Coppy, have you taken a look at this thread? http://publicopiniononline.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=17
Your "The repressive opposition to necessary development in the area" comment reminded of it. |

And other thing, it would be safer for drivers and pedestrians if the borough didn't allow parking so close the intersections. And there's the gridlock on U.S. 30 through town -- once you're in Chambersburg, you can't wait to get out!
The borough should have a snow emergency policy for clearing the streets too, so blackened mounds of snow don't stick around until spring, and people don't fight over cleared spaces, by illegally placing chairs in the spaces, etc.
Better syncing of lights and more sensible rules would make visits to town less frustrating, and people might even return voluntarily. |
News Flash! There is a PERC traffic signal truck parked on Scotland Ave at Norland....Could they be adjusting the timing? >Crosses fingers< _________________ Nevermind. |

I hope so; the worst part there is making a right turn from Norland onto Scotland. Wow, that's a sharp turn, and the huge SUV's and trucks (not to mention the occasional tractor trailer) spend the entire light cycle just trying to turn there. Doesn't seem like anything can be done either, with that house on the corner. And widening the road is out of the question with the railroad underpasses. I just don't go that way if I know there will be traffic, but it's typically easier than taking Kohler Road over to Walker simply because of how windey (sp?) the road is. I always get behind a Buick who insists on stopping at the Stop signs with complete disregard for the "Except for right turn" below it.
By the way, that giant church they built on Kohler Road gives off so much light at night, it can probably be seen from space.

Yes, there's that, and if that structure happened to be a private building or company, people would be flipping out about it. Churches are the only thing there are more of in Franklin County than Fire Departments. |

Didn't Chambersburg make into the Guinness Book of Records for most churches per square mile?
Or is that a local myth. _________________ Nevermind. |

That has to be a tongue-in-cheek thing; it seems that way, at least downtown but I doubt Guinness has a record for an American city or town with the most churches per square mile. A quick Google search however revealed Jamaica to be the country with the most churches per square mile.
Further Googling suggests that Graniteville, SC as being the American town with the most churches per square mile, a record it shares alongside "most unsolved murders per capita" in America. I would suspect the winner would be a southern town, but Franklin County can be as southern as it gets when it comes to culture and people; minus the charm and hospitality.
Wheaton, IL comes up as another possible winner in the "most churches" category. Franklin County may have a lot of churches, but also a lack of diversity. All of the churches are just varying degrees of protestant with a large population of Mennonite and Brethren but few Catholics or Jews. Islam is non-existent.
How can demographics and geography not play the single most deciding factor in what faith a person "chooses?" |
