What is up with all the people who litter around here? It is infuriating to see McDonald's bags and cups, or other fast food bags, just tossed out of car windows and lying along our roads. Of course, that's not the only thing. I live on a mountain road and every day it's a parade of fast food items, beer and soda cans and bottles, even deer guts during hunting season! What kind of person would do this? I call them subhumans. But what can we do about it? I have thought of calling state police when I see someone toss a wad of paper or a can out of their window, but I just have this vision of the cops rolling their eyes and acting like they have so much more pressing business to take care of. Plus if you DO call and report a plate number, then don't you get into a he said, she said sort of thing? I am interested to see what you all think of this problem. Or whether you agree that it even IS a problem.

I agree that it's a problem, but I think it happens everywhere, not just in our area. I help pick up roadside litter twice a year with the Adopt a Highway program and find it sad how much trash we pick up each time. A personal pet peeve is seeing the hundreds of cigarette butts lining the roadway at intersections. It's gross!!

I think there is a number you can call and report a litter bug and they get a warning in the mail. Maybe taht is what needs to be done. Isn't is just as easy to take it out of your car when you get home???

Litter is a problem everywhere but it's frustrating to pick it up out of your yard all the time!

Living near a bar we end up with beer bottles thrown in our front yard (broken and whole) and the alley at the back of the property gives us a plethora of fast food wrappers, cig butts and packs. I never witness it though. Maybe it's time for a stakeout!

I hate those plastic grocery bags -- you always see them hanging from tree limbs, or blowing around that empty lot beside the Chambersburg Wal Mart and Radio Shack.

I have gone to court twice as a witness to littering. Both cases the judge found the sad excuse for our society guilty.
This is how it works: You see someone throwing trash out - get license number - turn around and pick up the evidence - call the appropriate authorities. In my case both incidents happened in state forest area. I called the forest department and they filed the charges. Helps if a second person sees the offense.

Good stuff. Think it's the same for noise ordinance violators?

Yes they do but they are small and not suitable if you are shopping for more than one person.

they're bigger than plastic bags. I'm not saying anyone should just use those, but one or two could make a difference in the long run.

Plus, you'll need plastic ones for cleaning up poop

I'm all for humor, but can we get serious for a moment? I use cloth bags when I shop for groceries. Plastic is terrible for the environment. About picking up poop, check out www.poopbags.com. They sell very cheap, easy to buy plastic-like bags that are completely biodegradable. They also fit in those bags-on-board holders that attach to leashes. Perfect! Just pull 'em out, pick up the poop and deposit the bag in the trash, competely guilt free!
