I need to upgrade my speakers for my home stereo/entertainment center. I have a Yamaha receiver, with a PC, CD, DVD, DishTV and VCR plugged into it. The satellite speakers are OK, but the main ones are some circa 1988 Fisher tower speakers which are fine, except they're too big.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I have a set of Onkyo's which are fantastic; but it depends on your price range. Those Yamaha receivers are pretty sweet. What's your max wattage and price range? |

Well, being cheap by nature... I'd be willing to pay a few hundred if the product was worth it. Probably be the last speakers I buy. Max wattage, I have no idea.

That's ok, there's a lot to consider.
There are three kinds of speakers; tower, bookshelf and satellite. Tower speakers are best, they're the big ones that sit on the floor, because they provide low frequency bass response. This is particularly helpful if you don't have a subwoofer or at least a really good one.
I actually have bookshelf speakers, which seems to be more your speed since you're looking to get the size down. They sound great.
Satellite speakers are smallest and are wall mountable; they don't produce any low-frequency sound so you'll need a subwoofer. They're also pretty expensive.
You can probably find a nice pair of bookshelf speakers for under $200; Infinity, Sonos, Polk and, if you want to stay the same brand, Yamaha. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc, the big electronics companies make inexpensive speakers that work fine, but they don't really compare to the brands that are exclusively audio.
Do some research on CNet and Amazon and see what you can come up with. |

I wish Polk made a set of computer speakers. Maybe they do, but I've never run across them.

PS - My personal faves are old Marantz and Bose speakers from the 70s...

| PC speakers are never going to be quite as good as home theater speakers; you can get a decent set of 5.1 speakers for the PC from Logitech now. I know that Polk makes PC speakers because I've seen them at work, but they were pretty old and they may not make them anymore. |

I'm not trying to equate computer speakers to home stereo speakers. The bigger drivers naturally move more air and benefit from the bigger, ported enclosures.
That said, I've been using an Altec Lansing sub-and-satellite system for my PC for years now, and it sounds really good considering its inherent limitations.
I'm just thinking about another set to plug into my iPod dock.
