the late ray depuy (he and wife joan used to run the Art Center in town) was a champion for the fountain....the last major restoration that i can recall was in 1995 (i believe)...

according to one site i found the state facing south is bronze....(http://valley.vcdh.virginia.edu/memory/franklinmemory_p3b.html)...so prehaps the rest of it is (?)...that site was VERY informative about our fountain and other civil war related town-icons (i'd suggest looking it up and reading thru it)

according to another site, there apparently is a time capsule built into its base

cburg side notes:

did a quick google on it....came up with this interesting link. cburg on wikipedia...go figure!

and this is a really cool "retro" look at our town via old postcards:

Great links, CCGirl! Thanks for posting them. I remember Ray Depuy, did he also write a column in the PO at one time?

I believe that he did, Maggie. He knew alot about the town of Chambersburg. I think you could probably label him the town historian in a way.

IIRC, Mrs. U. L. Gordy (wife of former school superintendent) bequeathed a sum of money for the complete restoration of the old fountain. Now, she will be rewarded by the school board when they rename the new "U. L. Gordy" school.
