Has anyone noticed the new telephone poles near the bridges at exits 17 and 24 on I-81? Does anyone know what is affixed at the top of them? They sort of look like cameras, but I'm not sure.

i think they are cameras on the poles to catch speeders, they're probably triggered at high speeds 85+? but i'm not sure

I noticed one of these at the Walker Rd exit just the other day... I think they may be cameras, but I don't think they can be used to catch speeders. I'm not sure either though.

Yeah, I don't think they could use them to ticket speeders either. Getting a licence plate number and car description doesn't prove who was driving.

I was thinking maybe traffic monitoring. I don't know what about the traffic they would be monitoring though. Maybe to determine if a traffic light is warranted??

hopefully to put a light on walker road..

anyway they can use cameras to catch speeders and do routinely in other places, they also use cameras to catch people running lights.

They're cameras.

I believe they are part of the PenDot camera system that should be in place by the end of 2009. It will cover the entire Interstate system of PA. It will help determine if there is a problem with traffic flow and if so...they can send a message to the big signs that are now in place. They can also assist emergency personell with traffic accidents at the ramps where most of the ones in our area are being put up.

No, they are not for speeders. That would certainly be an impossible task considering the position of the camera vs. the vehicle flow and license plates.
