Shuster votes against GI Bill
Altoona, PA 15 May 2008
Duncansville, PA -9th District Democratic Candidate for Congress Tony Barr released the following statement. After learning that Bill Shuster (R PA09) voted against the New GI bill and voted against War funding.
“I am grateful and glad that the United States House of Representatives saw fit to pass H.R.2642 today. I have always supported the idea of a ‘New G.I. Bill‘. Today’s veterans deserve a real reintegration program to help adjust to the civilian world”, Barr said, quoting the IAVA website.
“I think it’s outrageous that Bill Shuster, usually first in line for a photo op with Vets, can vote against Veteran’s benefits and refuse to fund the war he so vehemently supports. Then again, he has voted against Veteran’s benefits a few times before so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.”
Shuster voted against expanding access to TRICARE (Military Helathcare): HR 1815 , Vote #221, 5/25/2005
Shuster voted against a Bonus for US Service Members HR3289, Vote #554, 10/17/2003
Shuster voted against funding for troop equipment HR 3289 Vote #547 10/16/03
Shuster voted against all three amendments to HR 2642 Vote # 328,329, & 330 5/15/2008 _________________ Tony Barr for Congress |

The original GI Bill was one of the most decent, and productive, pieces of legislation ever enacted. It helped drive America's post-war boom, and had a lot to do with the emergence of our so-called "greatest generation."
But I doubt that success can be recreated today through the same means, simply because of the numbers. We're talking about the difference between millions of post-WWII vets as opposed to tens of thousands today. We should still do what we can, but the difference in scale probably precludes the sea change we saw in the 1950s. _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |
