OK how does it work? I mean I know what it does but if I get the Comcast Triple Play ( doesn't seem like I have a choice Embarq does not do my area) can I tell them I dont need the DVR and buy a TIVO? Also if my phone is though the cable modem can I still download the menu?

Here's what I know...

Comcast's built in DVR is nice, but not awesome like TiVo's. I got it because it was offered as part of deal with my HD cable box for a nice rate.

You don't have to get Comcast's DVR though and you can use Tivo instead if you want.

As far as I know, Tivo downloads its listing through either conventional phone lines or through a broadband connection; Comcast's phone service is broadband, so it would work just fine. I also believe there is a Tivo box made especially for cable.

Finally, there have been talks for over a year about Comcast offering Tivo through it's regular cable service. You might want to hold off on buying a Tivo because Comcast may offer it at some point without buying extra equipment (but who knows, and in this area, it may never happen).

.

What makes TIVO better than just a plain Jane DVR?
