The following Christian music concerts begin at 7 p.m. Sundays at the Chambersburg Memorial Park Kiwanis Band Shell. Presented by the Council for the Arts, the summer concert series is sponsored by the Chambersburg Recreation Department and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. They are:

"The Way, Christian praise and worship, June 1; Leslie McKee, contemporary praise and worship, June 8; Country Christians, southern gospel, June 15; Undivided, gospel, June 22, sponsored by the Franklin County Sunday School Association; Gospel Band, southern gospel, June 29;

Buddy Harne, southern gospel, July 6; Promised Land Quartet, southern gospel, July 13; Masters 4 Quartet, southern gospel, July 20; Kings Ambassadors, gospel, July 27; Prodigal, Christian rock, Aug. 3; Chestnut Ridge, bluegrass, Aug. 10; Eastern Gate, traditional/contemporary, Aug. 17; and Guilford Station, gospel bluegrass, Aug. 24.

It sounds like my tax money is going toward "concerts" that include praise and worship... since I'm personally not interested in Christian music, as I'm sure many people aren't, this doesn't benefit me at all. Even if the money is from private donors, I still don't think our recreation and parks departments should be sponsoring religious events like this... why not sponsor something worth attending?

Why hold Christian concerts at the park? We've been talking about how music festivals would be such a great idea in Chambersburg over the summer... so why not pick something more appealing? Blues, jazz, rock, reggae, bluegrass... these are styles that anyone can enjoy and doesn't push a religious agenda. Not to mention the fact that Christian-oriented music just typically isn't very good.

I'm getting tired of theocratic Franklin County.

I think the real issue here is, Why is the local government supporting anything of this sort? regardless of what bands are playing?

I tend to somewhat of a libertarian, minimal government and all that...why not fix the roads, or raise the cops pay, or lower my taxes instead of entertaining people. Granted, in a society such as ours, where our government(s) decided long ago to do more than the should, a concert is not exactly a bad thing to sponsor.

I tend to agree with you there Alex, and there are certainly far more public services that tax money can be used for the benefit of our community... I tend to be a bit left-leaning if anything on the matter.

But I think that public entertainment, such as festivals, fairs, community gathers do enrich our area and bring people together, so that's certainly not a loss.

This concert series only appeals to people who are interested in public praise, worship and Christian-based music. It's not a music festival, it's a Christian festival and I tend to take some issue with that. The fact that our community is "God fearing" or that this is the Bible belt of Pennsylvania means nothing on the matter... if my taxes helped pay for this through the Recreation department then I'm pissed off about it.

I'm still in favor of community events, but lets leave the religious stuff in church or to yourselves.

Srsly, I agree.

I'm a tax-paying part of the community, as are several others who have absolutely no interest in this event. Not because I'm anti-religion, not only because am I not fond of religiously-branded music, but because some of the nuts this will draw out are not who I want around me or my child.

Hopefully you won't run into "jtb" or "Call them..." from the Topix. They may try to stone you. Sad

Shocked I KNOW, right?!

Well,
"Call them" can be perfectly reasonable and well-thought sometimes, but 'jtb' is just a horrible waste of natural resources! What a hateful little man!!

I have never seen him most anything remotely reasonable and it's quite disturbing. I hope he's a shut-in, so that I don't risk running into him anywhere. It seems as though his hate and intolerance would literally ooze out of him.

I've gotten to the point where if he is the last to have posted, I won't read the board and if he has posted on a comment board I am reading, I completely skip his posts. I am so far beyond the "Well, let's see what he has to say this time" mindset that it has become almost second nature to skip any block with 'jtb' to the left of it. Very rarely do I read any post that is even replying to one of his comments! (Exceptions being comments made by present company, of course!) Wink

'Call them' seems like he has multiple personalities. He's quite respectful and well-spoken (well-typed Wink ) with me and has enough of a sense of humor to get my posts and not take them wrong, but I've witnessed him be quite nasty to others. (Dave, Carol...)
Sometimes, I found his target's argument to be flawed as well, but thought he went overboard in his reaction. And, he is relentless in finding fault with those he disagrees with.

But I have yet to see him take jtb to task, instead he actually seems to try to bolster his arguments, which kind of flies in the face of my "'Call them like I see them' is an intelligent and pretty rational person." idea.

Ramblings aside, yes, Anonymouse, people like jtb are the exact type that cause me to cross the street and walk, very quickly, the other way. I want no part of anything that has to do with them nor anything they find pleasure with.
It may not be contagious, but I'm not taking any chances.

It's a good thing that we are fortunate enough to have you around, 'Mouse.

No problem. He's the first mouse I thought of to use.

I must have missed the posts where "Call Them..." wasn't being a hateful name-caller. Maybe it's just when he's talking about religion that he's so ugly. Ironic, really.

That seems so true, and it breaks my heart. It seems like the strongest argument against Christianity is Christians themselves.

Oh, and on the topic - I believe that the strongest advocates for separation of church and state ought to be the church.

People are so short-sighted. I predict a day when a town or county has a majority Muslim population that wants to have Muslim prayers in schools and display religious symbols in public places or close businesses during Ramadan. Then the Christians who are pushing so hard for "respectful observance of the majority religion" will be singing another song - and it will be their own fault.

Until then, I guess it's up to those who love the constitution to maintain that wall.

Oh...and I recently came across an old Bush quote: "I appreciate that question because I, in the state of Texas, had heard a lot of discussion about a faith-based initiative eroding the important bridge between church and state." - January 29, 2001.

Bridge...wall...what's the difference?
