Because those types of music are the devil's music and if you listen to them you're going to hell. Duh, Coppy.
Let's not forget that for the most part the only rock bands that come through are crappy Christian acts like Skillet, or even worse these hair-straightener "screamo" Christian bands, where the music sounds kind of like Slayer only they're singing about loving Jesus and being pure and stuff. What a crock.
Did you know that apparently there are handbooks out there for parents which list secular bands their kids may listen to, then list bands that sound similar but espouse a "Christian" message? |

That Christian hard core metal is so unbelievably awful... and Skillet. I'd almost think you're joking, but you're right; those are the only local bands I've ever read about in the PO.
I mean, all things aside, the music is bad... and I fail to see the artistic merits of any band that refuses to actually sing about real life, and instead espouses this inspirational, unrealistic crap. I'm totally cool with being into the Christian rock scene, whatever that may be and as oxymoronic as it comes across, but don't shout it from the mountaintops (or public parks) with my tax dollars.
I know I'm starting to out on a limb here and alienating some local people, but could Chambersburg please join the real world for just five minutes and realize that we're not all itching to pray every second of the day... even when being entertained by presumably contemporary rock music. If you scream Rebecca St. James lyrics, it doesn't make it any less Rebecca St. James... it just makes it even more annoying. And I can't think of a single abomination more nauseating than "Christian County" (which I have noticed Mix 95.3 sneaks into it's regular 'best variety' lineup of 7 songs).
All right, I'm gonna go illegally download the new Jars of Clay album, burn it to CD and then stick it in the microwave. |

and i really reallly really wish something new would come here, instead of the type we're talking about....oh, i dunno .. like blues. or indy. or omg a combo!
maybe the screaming metal bands just couldn't hack it so they turned christian to hit a new market? pr perhaps? hum....

You pretty much hit the nail on the head here.
You know after the show the guys in these bands are hitting on underage girls trying to get them to come back to their bus/van for some brewskies or other contraband.
I keed, I keed (sorta). But seriously, I have Christian friends who agree the majority of Christian "artists" are God-awful (pun intended). You'd think that if you're singing for your lord and saviour or whatever you'd strive push your music to new artistic heights, but it's just not so. There are a couple of mentionable bands who are affiliated with the whole Christian thing; a band called mewithoutYou from Philadelphia is one that comes to mind. Neutral Milk Hotel was a band from the 90s who were also quite good. Apparently Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is a devout Christian, as is Gordon Gano of the Violent Femmes (you know, "When I'm-a-walkin I strut my stuff, etc. etc.") |

I was all into the Christian rock thing...when I was 12. Now, not so much. There are a few who are decent, but I wouldn't classify them as "rock." |

I was really into NMH for a while, mostly because I thought it was cool to like music that was completely weird and off the beaten path. Of course, that IS cool, but I wouldn't call them Christian... all because God may be mentioned in lyrics doesn't mean its all "Jesus I Love You!!!" over and over. Remember, I mentioned the lack of realism and emotion in Christian rock as its biggest problem.

In fact, his music is decidedly real and full of emotion, which is the antithesis of what Christian music is to me.
So yeah, we can talk about the religious undertones in Violent Femmes lyrics like "body and beats I stain my sheets," or we can agree that this Christian music is lousy and that my tax money shouldn't go toward a musical concert that's really nothing but a public prayer service. |

i didn't take neutral milk hotel as a Christian band either, though the singer is legitimately crazy and wanders around in the wilderness.
(edited to add, all i can think of is "semen stains the mountaintops" and how that must have been a Bible verse I missed)
I'll buy the Sufjan thing (I love the Christmas 5 disc set)
anyway, mentioning God in lyrics doesn't make a band Christian. Take the Thermals for instance, it would be possible for some people around here to listen to their album from last year and think it's Christian, when it's not really. I was just listening to cloud cult this past weekend, and noticed some Christian imagery, but again, it's used to illustrate a scene, not because they are necessarily trying to advance a Christian agenda. |

ah yea, I forgot about good ol' Sufjan. Probably because I got tired of all the hype after awhile and stopped paying attention. I can't listen to a lot of his stuff cuz it's so looong and drawn out. I do have Illinois and Michigan though. Pretty good stuff.
Back to the point...I agree Coppy, the govt. shouldn't be sponsoring religious concerts...especially lame Christian rock ones (if they were to do so anyway). |

ah sufjan...one of my favs.
i think that it is odd to have the gov't sponsor religious concerts. i guess that 'no one' listens to the 'rest of us' who want different musical venues brought to this area. god forbid we expand our horizons. |
