I know how Chambersburg can be, but imagine all the people it could draw downtown!
I left work at 7:30 and had to fight through a sea of (not exaggerating) THOUSANDS of half-drunk people and little kids just to get to my car.
That's an awful lot of people eating at downtown restaurants and shopping in the stores. |

| Chambersburg has a beautiful downtown, in my humble estimation. The revitalization over the past few decades is amazing to me. Everything is neat, clean, and looks as any small town downtown should look. We've lived here 36 years and really like it, esp my wife. (although i grew up very small town America, i personally could live in a little more metro area, but that is just 90 min down the road, so...). Chambersburg pretty much has it all, for as i say, small town life. |

| Chambersburg has 3 problems in it's downtown, ROADS, ROADS, AND ROADS. They are deplorable for driving on them. Other than that, as i said above in my post, very nice town. |

First of all, Chambersburg is trying to be something it's not: a small town. If people want a small town, there are plenty in the area, but Chambersburg is a growing community of over 20,000 people in the borough alone. When you take that into consideration, Chambersburg is far, far, far from "having it all."
Yeah, the roads are bad, but that's low on my list of gripes. I will say I've seen significant improvement in just the past 5 years... I don't know about the past few decades, but I can only imagine what Chambersburg was like in the 80's <shudder>.
Downtown's biggest problem right now is that people are afraid to go there at night; and for some good reasons. There's a lot of low-income housing right around the square, but there's also nothing to draw people in.
I suppose it's perfect if you stay home after 6pm every night, but I wish there was something more for the young and young at heart other than bingo nights, ox roasts and Christian music concerts. |

| I moved here in 1970. not much has changed except the population expansion. Nothing was kept up with...as you can see the sad school situation. They have been doing feasability studies since 1970, so now we may see space expansion at the high school (needed at least 20 years ago) and again i go back to the roads, they are atrocious. Finally did get extra lanes to walmart and an exit at walker road. again, they've been doing fesability studies on the roads since 1970, not much action. As for big city entertainment, that will never happen here. BUT, the good thing is you are only minutes from Washington, DC which has a lot. When i said Chambersburg is a small town...the make-up of the place now is small town, as you said, not much entertainment, etc. I moved away for years, with my job, but am back now to retire. perfect community for that!! |

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly say minutes away... it would be nice to not have to drive 30 minutes just to go to a decent movie theater or mall.
But I digress, the funds just aren't there because people here are not willing to admit their small town is growing and need infrastructure and school improvements. |
