Hey, .45chel,
I don't know a darn thing about suits or such. My guess would be that Lyon's is open the same hours every downtown store is open. (never the right hours for the working people!)
I want to ask you about your DH trying to get a job @ Letterkenny...is he applying for a federal job, or a contractor job? For a federal position, he can only apply online. Has he done this? I have a package explaining how to apply for federal jobs. (actually took a class how to apply) If I'm not mistaken, he has served in the military and should be getting "preferences" for employment. There are different stages of preferences. And, all federal jobs are pick by computer, at least initially, for interviews. Has he had an interview?

Regarding Lyon's, that's what I'm afraid of! He's off work Monday, but so many things around here are closed on Sundays and Mondays and the interview is at 10 am Tuesday!
It would be nice to spend the money locally though, since it must be spent. >sigh<

Yes, he applied online for a federal position, but no interview as of yet. He does have preference points (I believe a non-disabled veteran is 5 same as active-duty spouse---I can't remember. Confused ) While he was still active duty he would pick up repaired equipment from some part of Letterkenny and bring it back to the unit. He loved going over there, really liked the guys he dealt with.

What we have found is that many times the government jobs are unofficially 'spoken for'. They already have someone (a subordinate, a friend, a transfer in) that already wants the position and has spoken to everyone, but because it is a government job, they are required, by law, to advertise.

The approved applicants resumes are sent to the person doing the interviews and that person will decide if they want to call in all or some. Sometimes they 'oops!' call the wrong number and can then say they never received a call back.
The interviewer also decides exactly how much weight previous experience carries and prior work within the Depot or company can weigh pretty heavy.

Needless to say, I don't have my hopes up.

Employment-wise The benefits we have now are better than what we had in service (which was very similar to what civilians had, at the time) plus the pay is eh, But DH likes everyone he knows from there and wants a federal job because military service counts toward retirement in any federal job.

Honestly, I don't know why I bother concerning myself with him, you know, besides the fact that I married him. Laughing

So what about you, Mom4? Are you in the 'system'?

Lyon's is a quality establishment; perhaps one of the only such places in downtown C-Burg, and, as such, they have a website.

And it's a good website, too... not like the ones cookie and I were making fun of in another thread.

MONDAY - THURSDAY
9:30am - 5:00pm
FRIDAY
9:30am - 8:00pm
SATURDAY
9:30am - 3:00pm

Evenings By Appointment

Whoa! Yes, that's right folks, Lyons is open until 8:00pm on Fridays! Can you believe it? I can't... cruising downtown on a Friday night? Hope you need some menswear because Lyons is the only place open!

Again, I criticize a lot, but credit should be given where it's due... Lyon's is great; the staff is friendly, helpful and know what they're talking about (I think it's just three guys). I bought my first post-college suit there, and another since, as well as many of my shirts and ties (they will help you pick out what goes with what).

Anyway, Lyon's & Co gets the coppy stamp of approval

Plus I don't wear clothes so I have no real use for a haberdasher.

I'm not fond of covering up either, but even you should know that birthday suits are inappropriate for interviews!
Besides, H is a Michigander and Michigander=Yankee=Prude
I think he showers in his boxers.

Thank you SO MUCH for the link, Coppy! I am truly amazed by their hours and if their service is even close to what you have stated we will use them whenever needed!! Best part is, if they help him then I can send him in alone!! Not the first time obviously, but forever after. Oh Joy!!

Today I wanted to learn something new.
Then I found out that I couldn't, mean 'ole editors took it over to the best of the topics so I couldn't answer the last question. .45Chel needs to start another one. The Waldorf Hotel invented that yucky salad that has apples and walnuts. Did they also invent the Hollandaise sauce? How will we know? Another thread needs to be started. Hmmm .45chel?

Editted to spell "learn" right!

Hey chel, in answer to your question, no I am not in the system. I was working at the Depot as a contractor, but lost my job due to a disability. I did have a few friends who were trying to help me with the "ins and outs" of getting one of the federal positions. (Before this disability took over my life). But, since you are already aware of the Federal hiring system, all I can say at this point is "self-nominate, self-nominate, self-nominate".

Did hubby find a suit for his interview? Gosh, you would really love it if he didn't have that long commute everyday.

Hey Mom4!

Just pushed H off to his interview in Hagerstown around 10am.
He looked so handsome!

We ended up getting a sports coat, a shirt and a few ties from Lyons (whom I recommend to any and everyone!!! They are Faboo!!) because, of course, he procrastinated and did not allow them enough time to ready a suit for him. (pants are in house unaltered and are tailored to the purchaser.)

We spent a better part of the morning discussing the finer points of 'Available work date' and 'Desired salary.'

Ended up settling on 'negotiable' for salary and had to go to a third party for the start date.
He was worried they would overlook him if they needed him to start right away, I said he didn't need to burn bridges he may need to cross again, PLUS I was pushing for a time that would give a last check from the old place, in case there was a pay hold at the new place (if that makes sense.)

Grandpa (always go to grandpa!) decided that two weeks was the rule; any less shows the new employer you may be disrespectful and over two weeks gets into a iffy area that causes some people to waver.

I kind of understand why accept resumes, but then require applications to also be filled, but I have always hated that doggone 'requested salary' thing!!

edited to correct an embarrassing spelling error

two weeks is exactly right, an employer can't be mad at you for wanting to give your old employer 2 weeks, and if you didn't want to give your old employer 2 weeks, they probably wouldn't want to hire you.

good luck!

Yup. cybersisters.

I'd get bored or hit a dead end and I would just go.

UNLESS I respected my co-workers and supervisors...or there was, you know, a federal contract involved. (for some reason, some people have momentary lapses of judgment and allow themselves to become government property.)
