Ex-officer gets 12-35 years for abduction, rape try

LEBANON - A former police officer and part-time clown was sentenced to 12 to 35 years in prison for abducting and trying to rape a North Londonderry Twp. teenager in November.
Michael Fernsler, 35, formerly of Annville, will serve the Lebanon County sentence after completing a 26- to 52-year sentence for molesting two 4-year-old girls in Swatara Twp., Dauphin County, in 2006.
Fernsler pleaded guilty to the Dauphin and Lebanon county charges.
He was an officer for the Shippensburg University police when he was arrested for the 2006 incident. He had been a North Londonderry Twp. patrolman who made several appearances before children's groups as "Chuckles the Clown."
"This is the stuff we have seen in horror movies," said Lebanon County President Judge Robert Eby before sentencing Fernsler on attempted rape, kidnapping, aggravated indecent assault and related charges.
The father of the teenage victim asked Eby to impose a stiff sentence.
"I can't begin to tell you how much we as a family have struggled to get back what we lost by Mike Fernsler," he said.
The North Londonderry attack came the day before Fernsler was to be sentenced in Dauphin County on the 2006 charges. Fernsler accosted the girl after she got off a school bus, bound her with duct tape and forced her at knifepoint to the woods, police said.
The girl was able to remove the tape and scream, breaking away from Fernsler, police said. Officers arrested Fernsler in the area a short time later.
After the hearing, the girl's father said, "We are just grateful we have our daughter. We are very proud of her." |
