| does anyone know anything about kayaking or canoeing on the Conococheague? I've heard there used to be hazards in Chambersburg (several dams?). Are those still there, where are they, know any good trips? would i be better just sticking south of Chambersburg? |

There used to be low-head dams at both Siloam Rd and Commerce St. Both of these have been removed. From Siloam Rd to Nitterhouse Park (behind Southgate) would be a nice paddle, provided there was a decent water level and not too many dead-falls or overhanging branches. That trip would be 2.75 miles on the water. _________________ Author assumes full responsibility for the content of their posts. i always wanted to try that, honestly. when i was little, we'd go to the siloam dam w/my inflatable raft, but my dad had me on a rope so i wouldn't float too far (long rope tho)...i was pretty little then, but man i wanted to try it.
am thinking of getting a canoe and taking it to shawnee (we have a cabin in bedford and are up there a lot)....maybe even cowan's gap, etc.
a_c, where do you canoe? |

I just have a kayak now. around here i've just been going up to long pine usually, but I like streams a lot better (you get to see a lot more with less work) I went to Letterkenny reservoir once, it's kinda dirty, and pine grove furnace, that's nice. I've never done whitewater or anything, just lakes and calmer streams |

| There is at least one very small dam (about a foot high - like the one in Scotland) after you leave Siloam, just before you get to Wilson College. After you leave Siloam, you'll cross under a railroad bridge, the creek widens and stills there because of this little dam. I forget exactly, but I think the creek forks just before the dam - right fork is something like an overflow and the left fork is the dam. |
