My Dad's family is all in Florida, but he went to Georgia for work, met my mom and stayed, now they alternate holidays, since all of mum's family is in GA. It's always been funny to me that the Georgia family all live within 30 minutes of each other, but they only see one another during holidays or when they need something.
Not to say they're deadbeats; a retired director of gov't for Atlanta, two V.P s of companies and a director of HR---they just do their own things.
Long ago, when I moved two hours away, I missed my grandpa, because he and my grandma are the ones who have always the ones that come riding to the rescue when we're stressed or need a break. They're the ones that call 'just to see how things are going.'
I don't miss my family as much as I miss what my family should have been.
Now, DH's family on the other hand...that is a tight knit bunch. He talks to his parents at least once a week and the whole group of third and fourth cousins (H's grandma had thirteen kids) get together for holidays (ex-spouses even show up!) and just because, in the tiny house of H's tiny grandma, a four foot tall, take-no-mess type of woman.
The first time I met them, I spent a while getting ready, wanted to look presentable after all. Silk shirt, knee length suede skirt, knee high leather dress boots (with no tread, which, apparently important during Michigan winters!) and a calf-length suede jacket (yes, I know how many animals died for my outfit...) I got out of the car and immediately sank into three feet of snow.
When I finally made it inside, after sliding across half the yard, I was greeted by a group of loud, scruffy headed, torn and frayed denim clad people, most of whom were wearing several knives bigger than my head!
They got a kick out of me.
And H.'s mom cries every time her boy leaves. I mean, come on!!
Guess the point of my very long ramble is that, H isn't going to move to GA (not that I want to move back anymore) and I'm not moving to the Northern part of the Southern Peninsula of Michigan, not that they have any decent jobs up that way anyway.
So, I guess we're doomed to travel the earth looking for a home that is agreeable to us both.
Right now, PA fits the bill.
