It's great how people have been able to express themselves civilly. Just compare the immigration thread to the Haloscan board on the immigrant article awhile back... (the one that had the photo of the hispanic woman next to the produce)
People were definitely heated then and though everyone is still just as passionate now, we are actually communicating instead of yelling at each other and name calling.
There is a better (virtual) atmosphere in here. Thank you for that.
(I still get to be snarky and mean occasionally, right?) _________________ Nevermind. |

| Yeah, it seems that the registration process keeps the morons away. |

I'll add my own word of appreciation - these boards have been refreshing alternative to the HaloScan forum.
I think the requirement to choose a name and use it in every post has either kept the flame-throwers away or encouraged them to be more responsible with their comments. Either way, it's a good thing.
What's the thinking behind not having the same requirement for the HaloScan?

I got a kick out of AnonyMouse's take on it.

He has posted that he believes that if we have to register or use real names, people who disagree with him will find out where he lives and harass or threaten him....
So they aren't posting because they are afraid to sign up. What if Dave or Coppy or .45chel find out where they live?! The liberal PO staff hate their posts and everything conservative so much, they'll probably reveal personal information to the liberal hit squad! |
I've been trying to think of ways to exploit this paranoia. _________________ Nevermind. |

I've found that this area may be the paranoia capital of the world; people are legitimately afraid of the government, and conspiracies, and all that kind of stuff. I don't know why that's such a rural thing, but I guess when you don't have a lot of contact with the outside world, you assume its out to get you. I personally think we're more likely to be attacked by a zombie uprising than some sort of civil war or government collapse. How many of you know people who went crazy over Y2K?
So, the registration thing is just another part of that I think; on Haloscan, the most asinine comments are made by "Anonymous." Always (well, almost always... tweddle has made his fair share). Having to register must leave them thinking they'll be tracked down although, honestly, I think the biggest part is laziness. Why sign up for something when you can just make a Haloscan comment right away.
Someone from the staff mentioned though that they'd like to combine the Haloscan comments with the forum. I think that's a pretty good idea. |

The only problem with that may be that since evryone on here seems mostly reasonable, we may be lulled into a false sense of security. Forgetting that "the others" are out there...lurking, just inside the shadows...DUNdunDUN! _________________ Nevermind. |

Just be careful....look around. The same group of people tend to respond most of the time.
Hopefully the new members will jump in and add to this....... |

If I have to go a-stalking Guess I'm going to have to buy that ghillie suit after all. Could make one, but I'm REAL lazy.
I can understand why someone would want to be anonymous, wait, no, I can't. Even with having a regular screen name I'm still anonymous. Well, I've given enough information that if someone wanted to find me they probably could (For those so clever, I'll give you one more piece of information--I have a shotgun ) But other people who don't prattle on as much as I do are still anonymous.
We don't need name-calling and other juvenile behavior, but differences of opinion will keep this forum alive. _________________ Nevermind. |

I agree, this is much better than Haloscan. Way too many opportunities for "Anonymous" to make bigoted/idiotic comments.
By the way, I never posted as "anonymous" on there but am too chickens**t to reveal my true Haloscan identity *ooooOOoOoO* |
