I just yearn for the day when I can "up-grade" from my satellite internet! Don't let enyone fool you into thinking that it is faster! Oh, then there's this thing about only being able to download a certain amount of MB per day. (150 MB I think.) If you go over that amount, the speed of your internet is greatly affected for 24 hours.
We've had to live with the satellite internet for a little over a year. (No DSL or cable lines where we live, yet.) Embarq is working on the DSL lines...so they say!

| I think that Internet access is a right and that lines should be run to rural areas; sort of like what they did with the phone lines. |

When we lived out in the orchards of Upper Adams, we were forced to rely on satellite internet as well. Unless we were willing - personally - to pay thousands of dollars for a utility to string a line out to the house. (This is what we were told, believe it or not...)
Satellite actually wasn't that bad for simple browsing, perhaps only slightly worse than a lower-end DSL connection. But the latency inherent in bouncing satellite signals all over the globe made online gaming utterly impossible.

you know what i'd like to see? all unground cables (tele, cable, whathaveyou)...would make more sense....storm coming? no probs...it's unground.
well...unless you had an earthquake. but we'd (hopefully) be ok here! lolz... |

I would love to have FiOS myself. I currently have Comcast and don't have much problem other then the throttling issues at times.

The company claimed it had singled out peer-to-peer, file-sharing traffic, because it was eating up an inordinate amount of bandwidth, which caused degradation across the rest of its customers.
Consumer groups were incensed by the tactic, and the blogosphere filled with criticism. The Federal Communications Commission is currently looking into the situation to see if Comcast has violated any of its Net neutrality principles.
Comcast has since begun working with peer-to-peer providers and has said that it will not target specific applications on its network. But the company contends that it still must find a way to better manage traffic on its network. And these latest tests, which will run in each market for a month, are meant to help the company figure out the best method for managing its network.
This latest approach is focused on individual users and does not target a specific application. If the network is congested, Comcast will slow down traffic for customers who are using over a certain threshold of bandwidth, regardless the applications they are running.
Comcast isn't the only cable operator struggling to keep up with bandwidth on its network. Time Warner Cable, the second largest operator in the U.S., has expressed similar concerns. The company said earlier this week that it will begin testing a new metering system in Beaumont, Texas.
The way it works is that subscribers who go over their limit for uploading and downloading material will be charged $1 per gigabyte. The test will only apply to new customers in the test region. The tiered pricing will work this way for the Internet portion of subscription packages that also include phone or video use: At the low end, users will pay $29.95 per month for service at a speed of 768 kilobits per second, with a 5GB monthly cap. At the high end, users will pay $54.90 per month for service at 15 megabits per second, with a 40GB cap.
It will be interesting to see how customers react to the both tests. Will the Comcast broadband hogs even notice their traffic has been slowed? And will Time Warner's customers take a beating if they go over their limits? I guess we'll know more when these tests are completed. H. and I decided if we had to pick between the two, Time Warner's method would be preferable.
The way we see it, we pay extra for a certain speed, if you don't give us that speed, then you should give us our money back.
I am sooo glad I decided not to go with Comcast a few weeks ago!

| I think both methods undermine the principles of net neutrality and service. There should be enough bandwidth available for both normal and heavy users; all at a reasonable price. I have a feeling that allowing tiered-speed services can actually costing all consumers more in the long run; especially if there's no motivation to increase the network's capacity. |

I use Comcast. They are the only provider that offers Fox Sports out of Philadelphia, which is a big concern for me as I am a fan.
I am however upset that we have to watch baltimore/dc sports on comcast sports. Two years ago they had Comcast Sports Philly on for about two weeks, it was GREAT ! |

well, a few days ago, Embarq made me very angry (not mean, not cranky (those are normal) Angry)
I've dealt with customer service and all that mess, argued about billing practices and filed a formal BBB complaint, but I'm still pretty PO'd
I'm going to miss DirecTV (Dish 'appeared' to svck in comparison) but I currently I can't deal with Embarq.
Comcast it is.
I think I just threw up a little
Question for those more knowledgeable (that would be ya'll): The boy likes this show called Radio Free Roscoe on The N (one of Nickelodeon's channels aimed at teens: they air Degrassi, Saved By The Bell etc.) From what I understand, Comcast only has The N at certain times of the day---so could one of you check and see if Radio Free Roscoe is on during the time the channel is available?

Mmmkay, the boy still gets to watch his Radio Free Roscoe.
I thought I was finally going to get to check out the local news, but all I can find is channel 2 which airs West VA news. 
I'm missing my morning does of Hitchcock courtesy of Chiller, but otherwise I guess Comcast is okay. (It doesn't feel alright, but that could be my resentment of cable companies in general.)

You dont get news out of Hagerstown? Or do you want news from Harrisburg?
