If you're going to quote me, please be honorable enough to include and address the context. You know, the part you omitted that said "And if you always put yourself in others' shoes..."

Honor? Please! Seemed irrelevant to the point at hand...why include it?

You're stuck in a cyclical logic pattern - all you've done is re-stated the original question...to which I've provided a few answers and explanations.

How is taking a shoveled spot "cooperating with your fellow man?"

Confused? that seems to be your position...

Wow, reading comprehension!

Let's try again. It snows. I shovel the space in which my car is parked. I leave for work, and come home. The space I shoveled earlier that day is taken, so I take another.

Make more sense now?

Yes - makes sense now. Me Me Me Mine Mine Mine...You see another mans work - and your response is "Screw them!"

Your assuming there is "another" spot...not always true. Usually not in these situations.

That about sums it up.

And no, I did not ask the same question. I asked a question in light of your oh-so-benevolent contention that you always consider others first, a question you conveniently dodged.

Evidently, a bunch of hypocritical blather.

I did not dodge anything...cite some hypocrisy.

Its the same question as the original post that started this...

Quote:
Can anyone explain why people feel that because they removed snow from a public parking space on a public street, they therefore "own" that space?

Why - because you didnt do the work! The Golden Rule...etc...

So - Same answers. What about those answers dont you like? (trying to break you out of your cyclical reasoning here...)

I have been in the situation of spending an hour shoveling out my vehicle only to come home and find someone else in the spot i worked hard to clear. I have also been one who has chosen NOT to take anothers "spot", but to either double park near the "violator" or proceed to try and park in the mess that the lazy bums who parked in my cleared spot, left behind. Most people have a concience and understand "the golden rule", but there is always someone who has that "screw them" attitude, and for those people, what goes around comes around, we just need to be patient and wait for that time or opportunity.

Since you asked:

You said you always put yourself in others' shoes first. Furthermore, you implied - repeatedly - that others' feelings always come before your own.

So... A woman with kids and 10 bags of groceries decides to park in a space you shoveled to more easily reach her home. Because - as is the case in the vast majority of urban neighborhoods - there just ain't a vacant lot on every block. But despite your earlier statements about consideration, you also would have a problem with this.

This issue is not cut-and-dried. There's all kinds of mitigating scenarios. But regardless of the circumstances, anyone who parks in a space you shoveled is a "jerk-off." Coming from someone who ALWAYS puts others first, this is hypocrisy.

...

And it's academic anyway, given where you live. You just like to argue from your tower in the sticks. The real world ain't so simple, which I suspect is what Torgo was implying from his or her "utopia" statement.

I live in a building with several very old residents. I shovel MULTIPLE spaces every time it snows, in addition to the one I was using at the time. I don't get uptight when people use them, and I don't worry much about taking one that happens to be open when I come home.

What do you do for your neighbors? Oh right, you probably don't have any. Just easier that way, eh?

Whoa guys! This is going nowhere. Let's get the discussion back on track, without all the accusations about who's more selfish, etc.

I guess I feel that folks should try to avoid taking another person's space, but let's face it, that's not always possible. Especially those who live on busy streets can't expect their spaces to remain empty all day while they're at work, just because people want to be "nice."

The plain truth is, you may not want to take someone's shoveled space, but sometimes, there is no other option short of parking a mile away. If you need to get to work or an appointment, you will probably find yourself parking in whatever space is available. I think if you live anywhere near downtown or just in an area where parking is always a problem, you shouldn't expect that your space will always be left alone.

Someone mentioned that some folks are very territorial about "their" parking space (i.e., the one directly in front of their home) all the time - not just when it snows. That is true. Some folks have the nerve to threaten others about parking in front of their house. Trying to intimidate people - when public streets are not "owned" by anyone - is wrong, under all circumstances.
