I'm reviving this thread due to the state article posted below

Quote:
Free cab rides offered for drinkers during holiday season
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A beer distributor and a taxi company are joining forces with Lower Paxton Township police to offer free rides for people overcome by holiday spirits.

Through January 6th, bartenders will be given special vouchers to use in calling a cab for intoxicated patrons who live in the township.

The bartender will give the voucher to the American Taxi driver, and Wilsbach Distributors Incorporated will pick up the tab for the ride.

Wilsbach Distributors marketing director Crystal Hartz says the company wants to make sure customers use its products responsibly. The company has sponsored the program for a decade.

Sgt. Tom Waller of the police department says each free ride could represent hundreds of people who might have encountered a drunken driver.

I am all for personal responsibility and all, but let's be honest, the judgement of any one of us is compromised after a few (or more) drinks.

I think this program is wonderful. It's a shame that we cannot figure out a way to have it all year long.

Save lives, save property and lose, what, fine money?

We all know that driving blasted is bad. The point where a person is blasted varies from person to person and varies even within that person (a drink on an empty stomach can nail you sometimes). So we set a limit.

A 300 pound person can drink more than a 80 pound chick. The chick gets arrested and big Bubba does not.

We also make all the other "fun" stuff illegal but good old alcohol gets that free pass. Why is that.

We claim drunk driving is the cause for so much destruction yet we have bars, whose sole purpose is to provide drink, and parking lots full of cars. Exactly what percentage have a designated driver - 20%?

So we have all of these legal establishments providing the goods to people who will leave them only to drive illegally. It is like knowing that a crime is going to be committed.

The police set up roadblocks & check every driver in search of that DUI. They stop 100 lawbiding citizens, subject them to inquiry, sometimes search their vehicles, write citations for a pile of other offenses just to get a single DUI.

We let this go on. If they want to catch a lot of DUI's, stop the cars leaving the bars. Instead we have nazi-like roadblocks - papers please.

If this is such a great plan, lets start searching peoples homes. We might find illegal drugs, black market prescription drugs, or maybe even a pack of rolling papers.

This whole alcohol thing is about as stupid as having a fireworks store in Pennsylvania that can't legally sell to Pennsylvanians and whose sole purpose to to sell illegal goods to people from other states because they can't legally but them in their home state.

Must be nice to live in Harrisburg; and to think, Dauphin's DUI rate is considerably lower than Franklin County's, despite having considerably more people.

Also, Dave, I agree pretty much whole-heartedly with your libertarian rant. It's not just the local area that's repressive and backwards, but also the entire commonwealth. The laws governing the sale and consumption of alcohol, plus liquor licensing coupled with a huge rural population with no access to public transportation, and you have problems. And then everyone scratches their heads and wonders why.

Oh, how about this; you can only buy beer in a case. No six packs, no singles; and forget about going to a store that sells wine or, gasp, groceries. No, you have to go to a special distributor for a case of crappy, bland, disgusting, light, American swill they call Coors, or Bud or whatever everyone around drinks because they can't afford to buy something decent as a whole case.

Whoa, getting off topic... we can talk about the case law, Johnstown flood tax and other archaic drinking laws in PA on another thread. Until then, drive safely!

In Kentucky, their liquor stores have a drive up window. Among everything else, you can buy those individual premixed drinks.

I read somewhere that on Friday nights between midnight & 2:00 AM something like half the cars are being driven by drunks.
