It's best for sensible people like yourself to just stay away at night. I get bored and Springhill is just full of sin...and Coppy is just normal.

Glue.

Like model airplane glue?

@__@

That's a heck of headache.

Sharpies or dry erase markers would probably be better.

So was anybody here reading the Topix forums before the PO pulled them? What was going on there ("abusive" says the PO) that they felt like they had to be shut down?

I also read this today at the Huffington post (regarding a new, ridiculous book "Liberal Facism" by some wingnut)...

Quote:
The great flaw in the liberal tradition is the obligation to respect other people's arguments, even when that other person is a nitwit.

It's the downside of the dialectic. We're expected to engage with everyone, whether or not their facts are wrong, their ideas are immoral or they're obviously just using the vocabulary of politics to express problems at home.

Point, counterpoint. It's an intellectual duty, like cleaning up after your dog.

It made me think of the Topix forum. Rational people spend a lot of time trying to reason with irrational people. I learned a long time ago that you can't have a reasonable discussion with an unreasonable person, yet we keep trying.

Why do we do it? Is it a tradition of respecting the other person's argument? Do we naturally assume that the other person is somehow able to be convinced? Why don't we just ignore wrong or immoral arguments instead of trying to engage them? Are we giving too much respect? (Obviously I'm not asking that last question of you, Springhill Smile )

I used to engage in dialogue in an attempt to change the other person's mind (I was much, much younger and far more optimistic then.)

There was a tendency, on my part, to see people with opposing views, not as human beings, but as obstacles; something to barrel through or discount. Once I realized what I was doing I was both ashamed and amazed. I don't want to be that person. I started to wonder if others do the same thing.

Now that I'm wiser and old and wrinkly I go out of my way to engage so that I may try to understand why my 'opponents' feel and think the way they do. Is it background? Environment? Sources (media, buddies, coworkers?) Or when they were growing up did a family member or friend have an experience that has forever colored their judgment?

I suppose what I now try to do is see others as people and not stereotypes of what I think "the other side" is made of.

I also feel like, the better you can explain your views the better you understand them. Not to mention the fact that, if the other person's argument is stronger and more intelligent, maybe it's time for me to rethink my position. Afterall, the most important thing is for me to be right! Wink

Chel, perhaps what you've gained in maturity is respect for the thoughts and beliefs of others and an open mind. Rare but noble traits. Even if you don't agree, at least be open to the thoughts of others.

redhead,
You have humbled me. ---But I also believe you think far too highly of me.

I would hope the trait is not as rare as it seems.

OK lets go from disagreeable discussion to mutual admiration.
That's the ticket.
