Alarmist was meant more for the media and the way articles have been written, as well as how most people locally, nationally, (you know anytown, USA) comprehend the articles. Dave you have obviously done your homework, and I too have done the same. I do take MRSA seriously and it has been on my radar for the last three years when I first read about it, since I am in a field were it may show up. The most effective tool? Wash your hands , Wash your hands, pass this on to your children and make sure they bring home gym and athletic clothes to be washed everyday!

look at hte global deaths caused by aids compared to msra

I think we're very specifically talking about the United States; this is why AIDS is considered a far more serious disease considering the worldwide deaths it is responsible. However, when it comes to infectious diseases, MRSA kills more. Of course, it is treatable, or least leaves a greater potential for recovery than those with AIDS.

19,000 deaths from 94,000 cases of resistant staph in 2005. Traditionally, the vast majority of these infections occurred among already sick or recovering hospital patients; it became alarming when an otherwise healthy high school student in Virginia died of the infection after it spread to his liver and kidneys.

Even so, most people who contract it do recover but the potential to spread it in schools and gyms is frightening enough for most people.
