I live just inside the borough, but the recycling thing is kind of lost on me. There's no pickups here as far as I know, and I'm not really into the mandatory, government subsidized recycling thing. But, I do go through a lot of bottles and cans. Some of its from my binges, others from those nights I roam the streets as a hobo scratching myself near the square (you may see me wearing a Baltimore Orioles hat from time to time).

A lot of the bottles are returnables because twist offs are for losers, but I tend to twist them all off anyway. Plus I "illegally" buy my beer in Maryland where I can actually get good beer, as a six pack, for less than the price of an equal amount of gasoline these days. Actually, it's not illegal since I usually manage to drink all of it just before crossing the state line on I-81.

I usually have to start chugging as soon as I hit Hagerstown Regional.

In any case, I'm left with dozens (if not hundreds) of empty, mostly returnable bottles in my car... and in my house, on my neighbor's lawn, and lodged in Chuck Norris' chest. Or, at least they would be if he ever stopped by. Did you know his tears cure cancer? I'm just trying to be a hero.

The cans are for "Rum & Coke Tuesdays" which is a party I have in my living room with myself and Dr. House. We solve medical mysteries together. It's usually a tumor.

So where I can take these casualties of my rock 'n roll lifestyle?

I don't know where you can take your recycling, but...

I first read your post while I was still at work, and I laughed so hard that a few coworkers were concerned. Thanks for spicing up a boring, newsless night. Very Happy

Sneak anything that has MI listed on the side as a deposit place into Michigan. You should probably drive for awhile 'cause the 5-0 is always on the look out for can smugglers close to the border.
You can get 10 cents a can!!! And the machines (which are set up in the back of grocery stores and Wally worlds) are really fun to use. They spit out a receipt, you take it to the cashier and she gives you money!
Or, you could just pick up more alcohol on your way to the register and use your receipt as legal tender...you may even get change!

Or you could just find one of the scrap metal recycling place around (the one in Frederick pays out decent) and take them there---alas, not 10 cents a can though.

I refuse to put my cans and bottles out for the local pick-up.
Not that I could anyway:
They took my blue recycle boxes because I put them out with newspapers in them. Apparently, I was supposed to receive a 'welcome package' that instructed me on the ins and outs of trash pick up and what we had to deliver to them personally. Soooo, because for three trash pickups in a row (the first three weeks we lived here) I put newspapers out and I guess I lost my recycling pick-up priviledges.
I'm so bitter. Razz

I don't know if you're a Seinfeld fan chel, but Kramer and Newman clearly came to the conclusion that transporting bottles to Michigan is a fruitless endeavor. And will gas prices the way they are, you're entire profit margin would be shot before you even hit Ohio.

Is there a place I can just take bottles and cans in Chambersburg, preferably (and I know this is asking a lot) over a weekend?

And chel, you shouldn't recycle paper anyway. It's bad for the environment. Cool

Kramer and Newman were amateurs!

The trick is to wait until vacation time, then go see places like Hell, MI or the year round Xmas village or get you some fudge from Mackinaw or visit Cheboygan (I don't know what's actually there, I just like saying Cheboygan)

Note: Hell, Michigan, despite popular belief is not part of Detroit.
They do have neat souveinirs tho' Very Happy

Do they pay well for scrap? I know I should recycle because it's good but it's nice to paid back a little for my coke addiction.

Chambersburg Waste Paper on Loop Road pays for aluminum - $.65/lb last I heard. They'll take any of your other recycling stuff. Walls on Racetrack Road in St. Thomas will too.

hum.....waste paper seems to be the best bet. even w/no weekends. we used it a lot and had no probs.... (we must've gone there during the week tho)
