There were about 6 or 7 comments when I read the Topix conversation. Every single comment was immature and really just plain rude. People bashing the band, bashing the newspaper for providing them "free advertising" (I never understood this; newspapers all over the country do stories on local bands/stores/businesses? Why are people so hung up on this concept in Chambersburg of all places). I basically just commented with "What's wrong with you people?" Because if even I was a bit sickened by the asinine remarks people were making, it was probably out of hand.
I think it's good they pulled the comments from the story. I think that's just a result of allowing anyone to anonymous post comments without registering; which is a good thing. But most newspaper message boards would never allow comments without registration, so good for the PO to do that at least. |

In addition to being particularly nasty and/or vulgar, the comments looked suspiciously like a campaign by rivals to trash the band.
BTW, many newspapers, including the 57 in our company, do allow comments on stories without registering. It certainly has its downside, but also some positives. |
