This is not a fly by night organization and it's not an org you call to come clear up your "cat problem". They help you to take care of any trays or colonies in your neighborhood. If you call the Humane Society they will have the cats put to sleep.
We had some strays we were feeding and decided that it was time to stop the breeding, we called Bella Luna and caught 4 out of 5 of the cats. Now they're fixed and living in our back yard. We feed them and know that we aren't going to see another litter of 4 or 5 next year. Just a chance to plug a little known but very wothwhile organization in the area. Bella Luna provides a service that the Humane Society doesn't want to get involved with, although we do support both of them. Again, Madeline Rock of Bella Luna 261-0115. |
Spay and neuter - give them shots. Turn them loose. Feed them. That's nice.
#3 carrier of rabies - shots or no shots - no guarantee. Thats nice.
Leave little things and smells in the neighbors gardens and shrubs. That's nice.
Get into neighbors trash and leave little unwanted lines on their cars - Thats nice.
Develop and spread disease - Thats nice.
Getting run over by cars, shot or poisoned.
Yep. Bella Luna is doing nice things for the cats and our citizens _________________ onewhoknows

OneWhoKnows,
I understand your frustration. I, too, wish the cats could be found homes where they are kept indoors, but given the alternative (uncontrolled breeding) isn't this a bit better?
Certainly not the be-all-end-all answer, but a step in the right direction.
Now, on to something more important...me.
Is it normal for a cat to sit on your shoulder like a parrot? He didn't do this before.
Do you mind if I bother you with cat questions from now on? _________________ I demand euphoria! |

Chel,
To the last first. Never a bother, ask anytime.
Regarding you new pet (Parrot). Cats have a mind of their own. They seem to take spells and do different things to entertain themselves. I would assume you are sitting down on a chair or couch when your little friend decides to join you on your shoulder. It could be possible kitty just wants to be closer to you or get a better view of the TV. J They are unpredictable little creatures from time to time. If the cat starts kneading your shoulder or back enjoy the massage.
Now, on to the more serious topic. It is my opinion, from many years of experience, it is far more cruel to leave a cat out to fend for itself for all the reasons I stated in the past. In addition, this is a very serious public health risk and annoyance. ALL of this because of PEOPLE. The indifferent owner that just let the cat out the door to “run free as cats are supposed to do” or because they didn’t want them any longer. Are you aware in seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats? That statistic should give you some idea of what is going on out there. No wonder people take matters into their own hands. And who suffers? The cat. It’s not their fault. The spay/neuter and release program sounds good but really is not solving the problem or helping the cat. In addition, there is no way the program can keep up with the reproduction of the feral cats. There needs to be legislation similar to the dog laws. There should also be a law that all cats should be spayed and neutered accept for licensed breeders. That is the only answer. Yes, the cats need to be taken to the shelter. Yes, most will be euthanized. That is the sad fact. The welfare of people must be first consideration. Will Pennsylvania ever pass such laws? I doubt it. I suppose I am sounding like a cold-hearted person. But I am being realistic. I have two cats, who stay inside, and love them dearly. _________________ onewhoknows

5-legged cat from W. Pa. to undergo surgery
| Quote: | EIGHTY-FOUR, Pa. (AP) -- Cats may have nine lives, but one unique feline has five legs - for now.
The cat, named Babygirl, will undergo surgery to remove the extra leg and another crippled leg.
The operation is expected to improve Babygirl's quality of life, according to the Washington Area Humane Society, where the cat will live until a home can be found for her.
Chrystin Rice, a kennel associate, said a woman brought Babygirl to the shelter on Jan. 19. The woman had first seen the stray animal as a kitten about a year ago in Canonsburg.
Aside from the extra leg, Babygirl appears to be in good health, Rice said Saturday.
"It's actually a really, really nice cat," she said.
A doctor at Metropolitan Veterinary Center in Robinson Township has agreed to perform the operation, though the surgery has not yet been scheduled.
Some people have expressed an interest in Babygirl, but no one has applied to adopt her, Rice said.
"We've had a few calls come in, but everyone's just kind of asking how's she doing, when's the surgery," Rice said |

Hah! That's a good one. Don't know of any "cheap" vets in these parts. Last month, I took two kittens to Best Friends, which I'd heard good things about. They were fine but I almost choked when I got the bill. $200! For shots and ear mite treatment - that's it! When I asked about neutering, they said it would cost about $200 if I recall correctly for the female and $120 or so for the male - about twice what I remember paying not that long ago.
It seems like vets' bills have risen exponentially in the past few years. I guess they're no different than the human medical field. _________________ The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands. ~Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923 |

| Best Friends, from what I've heard, is pretty pricey. Try the Chambersburg Animal Hospital. |

We use Creatures Great and Small off of Hwy 11 near Food Lion.
Just took two dogs and a cat in for examination. Cat got distemper. (I think) Dogs received full check ups plus tests for lyme and heartworms then boosters and fecal, one rabies etc. And it cost $290.
Could have been worse.
And I like the Vetenarian. (sic) _________________ I demand euphoria! |

| I take my cats to Companion Animals Vet Services on Maclays Mill Rd in Ship. I took two of them for booster shots, ears cleaned, claws clipped and general check up and it cost a little over 80.00. If you have more than one animal, you pay full office visit price for one and the others are half price. They are very reasonable with prices and are very good with the animals. They are there in case of emergency also. I had a friend whose dog broke its leg after jumping off the top bunk of a bed (we're talking a tea cup Yorkie...pretty high jump for such a small dog) on a Saturday night. She had remembered that I had said about Companion Animal after calling her own vet, who by the way wouldn't see the dog, and called them. She got their answering service and left a message. Within about 10 minutes, they called her back and told her to bring the dog right in. Xrays were taken, a cast was put on him, he was given a flea treatment and sent on his way. I can't remember what they charged her, but it was reasonable and they even put her on a payment plan because she didn't have much money with her. She was very impressed and has decided to switch vets. And by the way, they accept the vouchers from Bella Luna for spaying and neutering of cats. |

I think I know the answer already, but is this bad?
If not, where can I find someone brave enough to do it? _________________ I demand euphoria! |

It's not bad as long as you keep the cat in the house. As far as finding someone to clip the poor cat???? Not sure who would be that brave _________________ onewhoknows
