Noob aka-noobie
someone who is new to a game, or website, online game, or something
This thread is an attempt to help those who are unfamiliar with forum-speak.
Because we want you here.
Really.
So, when ever you have a question about what an acronym or word means just look here...
or ask.
We don't want you roaming around Urban Dictionary all by yourself.
Stay here, where it's safe.
Well, sorta.
If I've missed something or you have something clever to add, by all means, go for it. _________________ Nevermind. |

I like that one
Troll:
1a. One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument
1b. Noun
A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons such as rank, previous disagreements, sex, status, ect.
A troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a "Flamer" who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.
1c. Noun
A member of an internet forum who continually harangues and harasses others. Someone with nothing worthwhile to add to a certain conversation, but rather continually threadjacks or changes the subject, as well as thinks every member of the forum is talking about them and only them. Trolls often go by multiple names to circumvent getting banned.
2. Noun
A dumbass who makes idiotic posts in message boards newsgroups for the sole purpose of pissing people off, often lacking in intelligence. Sometimes compared to people who pass you by on the sidewalk then grab you in inappropriate places.
Borrowed from AnonyMouse's Topix post
In regards to Trolls
| Quote: | | "You have to want to restrain yourself, because you understand that the only way to get rid of them is to fail to give them the attention they want. A "troll" is not just someone whose comments you disagree with, or even just a nasty or badly-worded comment. A troll is someone who does not, under any possible set of circumstances, care what you think about him or his comments. He merely wants attention. Negative attention will do. The more you disagree with him, the more he is able to tell himself that he is persecuted and victimized or the only voice of reason or one of the elite few who has the God's-eye view of the world or whatever his current delusion is. If he isn't merely a narcissist who thrives on feeling attacked, he's just some putz who enjoys irritating other people. Therefore, you "feed" the troll by paying any attention to him at all. It does not matter what you say in response. Any response to a troll just encourages the troll." |

Flame
1. A tirade. The flamer may be quite articulate and intelligent as they question the upbringing of the flamee. One can also flame about a third party to a conversation. Finally, a flame may be from an idiot, in response to a reasonable post from someone else.
1a. To insult a person you are arguing with over the internet in hopes of reviving your argument.
1b. To insult someone electronically, or otherwise. Sometimes to be a group insult.
2. A flame is noun associated with the action of flaming, what people do when they express a strongly held opinion without holding back any emotion.
Although flames often get out of hand, they have a purpose in the ecology of cyberspace. Many flames are aimed at teaching someone something (usually in overstated language) or stopping them from doing something (like offending other people). Flame messages often use more brute force than is strictly necessary, but that's half the fun.
Netiquette does ask that you consider the art of flaming before pulling out the flame-thrower. _________________ Nevermind.

Flamer
1. A flamboyant homosexual.
2. A person who deliberately makes inflammatory or slanderous posts on internet message boards for the purpose of starting a flame war.
Flame war
A flame war is a heated argument between two individuals, that results in those involved posting personal attacks on each other during or instead of debating the topic at hand.
Most forums have rules that forbid flaming. This is because the quality of conversation on a forum can be seriously degraded by a flame war. Topics can be "hijacked" by two people who would rather flame each other than discuss the subject of the thread. _________________ Nevermind. |

For instance; ".45chel got owned by her avatar by hotlinking."
I actually prefer the geekier-but slightly more insulting-variation, pwned. There's some disagreement on how "pwned" is pronounced, but I like to say "powned." |

I happen to prefer pwned, as well, but thought I might try to be proper, for once.
As for hotlinking--I am lazy. _________________ Nevermind. |

| So am I, I hot link when I can... but if the link is broken or shows a message, then I can consider myself "pwned!" |

| I refuse to use netspeak, or whatever it is! It's just further corruption of a perfectly good language, due to perhaps laziness or wanting to feel "in the know" versus outsiders. |

Understood.
My grandfather says, "Using ain't for emphasis" after he uses ain't in a sentence.
I believe that is what we are doing on these boards, since the threads are not filled with chatspeak. (Thank you all for that )
This thread is merely an attempt to see that no one feels left out. I had no intention of forcing anyone to post in a manner they normally would not.
Think of it as a translator. _________________ Nevermind. |
