Personally, I love the word "pinko."
Put it together with "nihilist" and I just swoon... _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

I forget what it's called, but my fave was the one with the little Alpine hiker who plunges to his death if the contestant fails, yodeling all the while... _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

Sorry, I'm such a pinko commie liberal, guess my America hating was too obvious to hide. |
Oh, come now! Nobody said that.
POstaff (presumably Becky) was merely providing another way to look at the issue, a means by which to examine our own biases, since we all have them.
This is what I meant when I said earlier that participants in online forums should expect to have their opinions challenged from time to time, and learn to deal with it without getting dramatic and defensive.
The effect of such defensiveness is a chill upon the discourse, at least for the people who care about their relationship with other posters who might - for whatever reason - equate challenges to their arguments with attacks upon themselves personally. |
I found this interesting coming from you, Torgo, whose withering asides(e.g., regarding me, you wrote: "You respond well to criticism" and also accused me of spreading malicious rumors in order to further a political agenda) cast a chill on discourse simply by the very personal - and accusatory - nature of them. Please take some of your own advice. _________________ The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands. ~Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923 |

Hey, thanks for missing — and proving — my point all at once.
Very adroit. _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

Okay, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not reduced to the "I know you are, but what am I" defense.
I was merely suggesting that anyone who has difficulty separating their own sense of self-worth from the worth of their opinions probably shouldn't be posting on an Internet forum.
By crying and whining and calling people cynics and conspiracy theorists every time they oppose your arguments, you make others who may care about your feelings reluctant to do so, no matter how easy or tempting it may be.
Forums are no place for the thin-skinned. Fortunately for you, Bobo, there's apparently only about a dozen people who post regularly here. Otherwise, much more withering souls than I would be eating your lunch constantly.
But, I'm pretty sure you're not open to suggestion. So I'll just leave it at that and ignore your posts hereafter. Feel free to have the last "neener-neener!" _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

I would say "back on topic" but I get the strange feeling that unfortunate exchange isn't all that far removed from the problem underlying this billboard war.
In other words, billboards are macro forums!
Person A posts a message. Person B person dislikes that message and gets offended. Person B posts an inflammatory strawman in response. It just takes a whole lot more money and is seen (sad to say) by a whole lot more people.
Or am I way off base? Discuss? _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |

| I'm new here, but have been reading posts for quite some time. At the risk of making an enemy already, I'm gonna step in here and tell ya how I see it. You seem to me to be a bit hostile Torgo. I don't think people come here to be criticized. I think they want to express opinions and debate points with others who may or may not agree, buut I don't think they want to be insulted or be on the receiving end of personal attacks. |

Welcome, ye of the extremely huge avatar.
I disagree with you. Or I should say you're half right. The people you're rushing to defend don't want to debate. They just want to express themselves and have their expressions treated as tasty, unassailable nuggets of profound wisdom that others would have be, like, really, really, really, really mean and hostile to disagree with.
When you do, they accuse you of attacking them personally, when all you did was dismantle their idea.
How can debate be valuable when people are made to feel like they cannot engage in criticism, for whatever reason? That's not debate or argument, in the classical sense, at all.
It's just a circle-jerk. Might as well shout at a wall. _________________ "The Master would not approve..." |
