I heard NASCAR is having huge financial problems.... and those problems sound familiar. Hmm, just like the "big 3" automakers, NASCAR got greedy.
After experiencing unprecedented fan growth (albeit almost exclusively among southern, white people) NASCAR went hog wild... they extended the season, added more races, added more drivers, added more cars. Now, the automakers who supply the stock cars can hardly justify the cost (boo, Toyota, boo) and advertisers for the cars... since NASCAR is just a bunch of fast moving billboards driving in circles that people pay to watch... are starting to pull out...
Uh oh!
Meanwhile, attendance and interest in dwindling as people have decided they have more important things to spend their money on. |

The Craftsman Truck series (next year called the Camping World Turck series) will loose the Ford trucks as Ford has pulled out.
The Toyota truck has done so well and Ford has lost so much this year in sales it cannot even seem to run in the races. (I rarely watch the Truck series, however.)
The seemingly decrease in attendance started earlier this year when the gas prices went so high that the fans absolutely couldn't afford to pay for the ride to the venues, much less get in the gates. Hopefully that will turn itself around next year IF the fuel price remain or even go down in price.
Then we can watch my Jimmy go for four in a row! _________________ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

Well here's part of the problem... Ford and GM focus their entire business model on trucks and SUV's, despite rising fuel costs not, in any way, foreseeing a drop in that market due to the enormous profitability of those vehicles (markups on Trucks/SUV's are way higher than for passenger cars). Ironically, most of the people who buy them are the NASCAR fans themselves, despite stock cars being... well, cars.
The only thing more redneck to me than stock car racing has got to be stock truck racing. Yeee haw!
But I'm not here to make fun of NASCAR, I'm here to criticize its poor economic standing and business model, just like the Big 3's, because the greed, arrogance and excessive lifestyles of what Sarah Palin calls the "real" America is coming back to bite them.
Of course the fans can't afford to drive to the races... their vehicles get 8 miles per gallon! |
