Castro gave up the proverbial thrown late last night to his brother. Will Cuba change?
I, for one, doubt it until all the Castros are out. I am old enough to know and relive all of his (Fidal's) reign. (Bay of Pigs) _________________ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

Oh Cookie, now is no time for joking. I hope that Cuba will soon become a demacratic nation. Maybe then some of the embargos of some very fine Cuban impports would stop. I would love to visit there someday. _________________ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

| i actually wasn't joking...i find the bush white house legacy to be quite scary. they've had it long enough and when i heard rumors of jeb it made me ill feeling. i can see the same, tho, about the clinton legacy as well and the comments made that the youth today know of no other presidents (or potential presidents) besides bush or clinton (even tho i'm a hillary supporter)...this tho is scary.....imo....since the reagan era which ushered in daddy bush, the opinion of our country in the eyes of all the nations has dwindled and this is scary to me. i'm hoping it improves within the next election and number of years, however the regime of the bush clan has done very little to our political opinion of others towards our nation. |

I don't think cookie is so off either. Our president has shown such a blatant disregard for civil rights and the constitution, I wonder what kind of a democracy I'm living in myself sometimes.
Personally, I support lifting the trade embargo against Cuba. That's the first step toward making Cuba a democratic nation. Fidel was not interested in this, but he had a long and storied history with our nation, from the cold war to today. If we're going to be the world police, demanding that every nation become a democracy, then we should at least do something to encourage that (not including an all-out invasion).
If Cuba is content with their government, then so be it. The only one's they're hurting are themselves and American cigar connoisseurs. |

I don't smoke, but know people who do occasionally enjoy a good Cuban. (Pronounced Coo bahn)
But they have such other wonderful things there as well, Coppy. _________________ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

Like their food? I love Cuban food... fried plantains and ropa vieja. Probably because I love cumin and garlic so much.
And I agree, it would be a great place to visit. In the 50's, Cuba was a premier resort destination. It's really a shame.
I doubt Raul Castro will change things too much, but I hope America can make the best out of the opportunity and drop the embargo to encourage a free market there.
Major League Baseball would go nuts! |

Oh! I didn't think about that! They have so many great players they could have a few teams of their own, instead of sending so many to the US teams.
Edit: That just didn't sound the way I wanted, but you know what I mean. _________________ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.

| Well, MLB is the gold standard. Can you imagine Cuba opening up to scouts? It would be crazy. The Cuban team in the World Baseball Classic (was I the only one who watched it?) was exceptional. Castro himself was scouted by several MLB teams. |

Wow; consider me pwned! I had heard this little 'factoid' several times throughout my life, but never thought to do some of the basic fact-checking I love so much.
Thanks Cookie!
Did anyone ever see the Seinfeld where Kramer was getting a shipment of "Cubans" and wanted Jerry to hold onto them for him. And then it turns out the "Cubans" weren't cigars, but actual Cuban guys. After agreeing to sell them to a Texas businessman, Kramer finds out they're not even Cuban... they're Dominican! And the businessman figures this out, and gets all upset, but it was ok because the Dominicans got a job rolling crepes in a restaurant, but since Dominican cigars are inferior (presumably by being rolled too tight) the crepes started exploding on people's plates and burning their eyes.
Wow, Seinfeld was a weird show if you think of it like that. And hilarious! |
