Some people think that I like to complain. However, my complaints are just my way of critical thinking. Thought the PO could use a critical thinking section. Hopefully I can get one started.

1. Who has ever been caught behind a bus in the morning? I for one have been. It's not that I have to stop every few nanoseconds for the bus. It's when I have to stop for a bus with red lights flashing and nothing happens. That is what gets me. When I was waiting for the bus I would be at the bus stop 5 to 10 minutes before it was to arrive. Not now! Lets stop all traffic for 2 to 3 minutes for the kids to pack their lunch and get out the door. Oh yeah when the red lights go out get ready for the yellow to come back on because the neighbor has to get on also. Now I understand the importance of stoping for school buses no matter how many times they stop and nothing happens. Because the first time I try and pass I will more than likely hurt someone. I know this just how my luck runs. But what about the person who is late for work, bingo or, Sheetz and the stopping school bus is the last straw. I believe that the school district should should have some type of policy that states that if your child is not visible the bus should not be obligated to stop. Hopefully this will get some people thinking and start to ask questions. If my rant does nothing but save a scratch on one child it was worth it.

I am not sure why busses have to stop at each house. Example the bus taht picks up kids i my neighborhood stops at mt neighbor across the strrt proceeds past my yard and stops again to pick up my next door neighbor kids. For gosh sake...meet in my driveway and make it one stop. Talk about waste of fuel.
What happened to walking a little.

My old bus driver use to keep driving if we weren't at the appropriate stop when he came by! Our neighbor kids use to miss it all of the time but why should they hold traffic up for kids who are late? This will not be accecptable i the work-place so why are parents letting the kids do it???

Yep. I have not so fond memories of running up the block to the bus stop so I could make the bus. In fact, I periodically have nightmares about it! Shocked

Let's look at something else: what about the wear and tear, and fuel consumption on the bus?

i'd also like to throw in seat belts on buses as well (do they have them yet?)....if not....what are your takes on seat belts...i hear rumors that the seats and bars are supposedly alternative to seat belts, however if i had kids, i'd want them strapped in so that if there is a wreck they wouldn't be tumbling around.

buses seem uber gas inefficient....what could we do about that? hum.....

If the bus is travelng a relatively busy road with no sidewlks, the bus will stop in front of each house. I believe it is a state law. You don't want a bunch of kids walking along the berm - especially when it is dark.

No... but I did find some info on the "what's up with that?"

Quote:
Their ungainly appearance might suggest otherwise, but school buses are actually pretty safe. On average only 11 children are killed in school bus wrecks each year, compared to the 41,000-plus people who die in motor vehicle accidents overall. On a per-vehicle-mile basis the school bus fatality rate is one-seventh that of other passenger vehicles.

Several factors account for the good record. School buses are taller and heavier than most other traffic and generally travel at moderate speeds. In a collision, high seat backs prevent kids from being thrown great distances, and impact-absorbing materials soften the blow.

The question remains controversial, however. High seat backs don't help much when a bus is hit from the side or rolls over, and some people think more should be done. The national Parent-Teacher Association, for example, has called for seat belts on new buses. The federal government recently began a two-year investigation of school bus safety that will likely result in new precautions. According to Education Week more than two dozen state legislatures have considered mandatory seat belts over the years, although only New York and New Jersey currently require them.

Seat belts wouldn't necessarily make buses safer. On the contrary, some believe they would increase the number of serious injuries. Shoulder harnesses aren't practical in buses as currently designed, and lap belts are likely to cause more head and abdominal injuries because in a collision the wearer is jerked forward from the waist.

Then we get into the cost-benefit analysis. At $1,800 a bus, outfitting the 440,000 school buses in the U.S. would cost nearly $800 million--and when the annual death toll is only 11, how much lower can you go, realistically? Given that three times as many fatalities occur when students exit or enter buses, some think the money might be better spent educating the all-too-oblivious public that when the school bus's stop sign swings out, it means you.

I'm not sure how it can be enforced actually. If you think school buses are holding you up now, imagine the brat who refuses to buckle up. And bus drivers? I know that some bus drivers are perfectly pleasant people, but I doubt many of those I encountered in my childhood would enjoy the task of seatbelt enforcement.

Seatbelts on buses... any bus, just isn't all that practical.

And you can't make school attendance compulsory without providing a means of transportation.
