Feathers fly over billboards' fowl language
by The Associated Press
Thursday February 28, 2008, 12:16 PM
ALTOONA -- A convenience-store chain is taking heat from critics who say its new billboard campaign promoting a fried chicken sandwich contains foul language. Sheetz unveiled the "Crispy Frickin' Chicken" billboards at the beginning of February.

The company recently removed one billboard in Hazle Twp., near Hazleton, after local officials fielded complaints.

"There was a lady who left an angry voice mail," code enforcement officer Fran Calarco said, "and a man called and said he had small children and didn't think they should be exposed to that type of language. I told him I completely understood and agreed."

At a Derry Twp. supervisors' meeting Tuesday, Michael Sucec, who is a self-described street preacher from Harrisburg, said his letter of complaint to Sheetz triggered a response that the company was just trying to use a humorous twist on the word to attract customers. "We don't feel or believe that's humorous whatsoever," Sucec said.

Roughly one-third of the company's 346 stores carry the sandwich, and the campaign consists of 100 billboards placed near those locations, spokeswoman Monica Jones said Thursday. The campaign is aimed at young adults, and the company did not intend to offend anyone, Jones said.

"We're kind of known for edgy, kind of brash advertising tactics, and we knew this would spark a certain amount of controversy," Jones said. "That said, we're proud of the campaign."

Sheetz will take down the billboards on Wednesday, when the campaign is scheduled to end, Jones said.

Sheetz Inc., based in Altoona, operates stores in Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia

I think I may have seen one of these billboards somewhere in Franklin county. Check out the comments @ the Patriot news its almost as bad as our own billboard war. I'm not a big time Sheetz fan but this ad is great I just my stop and get me some of that "FRICKIN CHICKIN"!

Speaking of street preachers, when I was at ChambersFest, there was a street preacher standing on an milk crate in the middle of the festival doing his thing. I told my s-o to hold up because I wanted to listen to the "crazy person." It was a tongue-in-cheek comment.

A woman overheard me, turned around and said in a very stern tone "He's not a crazy person, he's a preacher." I told her that anyone who shouts randomly into a crowded group of people qualified as crazy to me, and if he was saying anything else, he would probably qualify as crazy to everyone else.

She made another rude remark and stormed off.

I mean, street preachers have every right to do what they do; but people should think twice when they badmouth panhandlers. It's essentially the same thing.

I hope I haven't offended anyone with this story. Actually, I don't.

I'm sure if people are upset about the words on the sign they must have heard or said the word before. I'm sure if they were parents they would not punish their child for using such a word. Or maybe they would gotta love the people at the local store that start to beat their child in front of everyone.

This is once again a situation of someone wanting to cry fowl (ha!) because they think their "rights" have been trampled or because they think something is wrong becasue they don't like it.

I am so sick of people being concerned about offending others and people saying that they are offended.

Life's not fair. Get over it.

am amening this too.

<sarcasm>because otherwise we'd be surrounded by fluffy clouds of happy ignorance and walking on poofy squishy marshmallows of soundlessness to make everyone happy. and everything is rose colored. </sarcasm>

/end rant. sorry. i may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed this a.m. but really...censoring can be dangerous....the more you edit for people the worse it will be....if that is your and your family's prerogative then so be it, but that doesn't mean others should be not able to view it....

Wow, lots of articles in the paper today on this. Seems it only takes one overly-sensitive, attention-hungry whiner to get them all crawling out from under the woodwork:

Quote:
Michael Young, a resident of Chambersburg, said the sign advertising a Sheetz Inc. sandwich is a disgrace.

"It's the same as you-know-what," he said. "How many times do you hear the words 'G-D' on our local TV? Now they're putting this on billboards. And you wonder why children today curse at you."

Young said he realizes that some people might say "frickin'" is not profanity. Yet if someone addresses these people using this language, they will feel insulted, he said.

"It insults the intelligence of human beings that want a better world," he said.

Quote:
The Rev. Dan Keen, pastor of Jesus is

the Light Community Church, St. Thomas, said the owner of Sheetz does a lot of charity work. However, he's disappointed in the choice of words.

"I think it's wrong," he said. "This sends a bad message to young people. It's time the church stood up against all manner of sin. The word is slang for the 'f' word."

Quote:
Bishop Council Nedd, chairman of In God We Trust, said that while he was not personally offended by this specific advertisement, he understands how others might be.

"What I find truly offensive is this downward spiral to the lowest common denominator of humanity," he said. "I'm not surprised by the depth to which advertisers now sink to increase their market share."

Wow, the PO went all out on this... all of the exciting figures from billboard controversy's past.

Rev. Keen was the guy who wanted to give up his tax exempt status to support Mike Huckabee. I'm not sure why he's not still doing this; Huckabee is still in the race and doesn't seem to mind that he's been mathematically eliminated.

I guess math is just a theory.

Rev. Need is the "Atheists Hate America" guy. Funny how he doesn't seem to mind; I find it strange that he wouldn't take every possible opportunity to overreact to America's "declining morals" (or whatever). I guess the big bucks are in hating atheists.

And I guess Michael Young is just some guy (and likely not the same Michael Young who plays shortstop for the Rangers). Funny how he wouldn't complain to, oh, say Sheetz or the Chamber of Commerce?

Yeah, seems like someone just wanted to cash in on someone else's whining.

What a frickin' mess.

Quote:
Let me put a little spin on something for you. The original "f" word that now can't be said was an Old English verb. It meant to turn over the potatoes in the field.(I never did undertsand how it got from that to what it now stands for.)

I can understand why Sheetz used Frickin' Chicken; it is a popular word (not vulgar by nature) and it does rhyme with "chicken".

Did anyone complain about the sign at Chick-fil-a with the cows that say "eat mor chikin"? That should be more reprehensible that that of the Sheetz. They won't even use proper English! What is that teaching the youth of America?

I stole that from "Retired Teacher" on the Topix board.
I actually see nothing wrong with the ad. I think there are way too many prudish people here that take things too far out of context.
