Maybe it's because I started taking my meds again or maybe it's because I realize that EVERYONE needs a kind word every once in awhile. Whatever the reason, here's a thread for anyone who would like to say something nice to the PO staff.
An example:
I logged on this morning, cranky and forum-deprived to find the following poll on the Public Opinion homepage. The title and my favorite choice, made me smile. Thank you, Poll-maker, for the morning grin.

Thanks for the link. I found the editorial quite amusing. _________________ Author assumes full responsibility for the content of their posts. Opinions expressed on this website are not necessarily those of the Public Opinion, its editor, publisher, Board or affiliated parties. |

Some people take that stuff personally.
I, for one, acknowledge my obnoxiousness and choose to believe I am not as bad as some, so Ms. Bennett *couldn't* possibly have been referring to me!
There are some people who like to spew the nastiness on a regular basis---- online comments are a curse and a gift.
No matter how raw some comments are, no matter how much the make you go it's better to know that those thoughts are out there than pretend they do not exist.
Besides, A_Citizen, who would debate with? _________________ I demand euphoria! |

I couldn't have said it better myself actually. I have noticed that if you go to other message boards that are based off of local newspapers, you will find a similar element of incompetence. Though maybe not quite as bad.
I think Franklin County is still getting used to the whole Internet thing. |

I have believed deeply for years in the newspaper's mission of providing a forum for public debate. At last we have the perfect tools -- and I must admit to being disappointed in how they are being used. It's a mixed bag, of course -- good information is sometimes posted and we do get story ideas from Topix.
I hope this just a transition phase, and that common decency and common sense will prevail. Another thing newspaper editors have always believed is that although unfettered debate can get rough, the best ideas/thoughts will always rise to the top. Hmm...
I don't mean to insult anyone, and I wasn't referring to the majority of PO forum posters. Using the "new" public sphere for debate is a bit like driving a car -- users need to learn some things to use it effectively and not cause damage.
I'm attending a seminar tomorrow on how editors are handling article commenting. I'll report back!

Hey, where's the part about everyone hating the PO staff? I thought I left it out this time!

munchkin? LOL...
i think the p.o. forums are interesting because they have a mixture of news, politics, religion and fun stuff....it's the fun stuff that the others are missing. and silliness can be combined with seriousness (a plus in my book!)...it's fun to debate, but it's also good to have a community of ppl who can share ideas, thoughts, and jokes....to mix it up w/the serious. can't debate all the time. that's just boring. haha!!! |

Our view: Occupation takes its toll on domestic front as well

I appreciated this Opinion. I would say I enjoyed it, but the word enjoy doesn't belong with the subject.
I found today's poll question quite telling, as well.

Yes

No

I wonder how many people's opinions change when faced with the reality service members face. I doubt that many of them would publicly admit to being terrified of what is happening. While in service, we were supposed to wear happy faces at all times and a spouse speaking out could be detrimental to a troop's career or well-being.
There is also the fact that, saying that this 'thing' has become a giant mess, could be taken as telling the family of a dead soldier, "Your kid died for nothing, a mistake. Their life meant nothing." That's not true, of course, every service member is worth more than their service. They are fathers and mothers, children and siblings. They have done more than serve their country.
They fight...They fought, not because they wanted to, but because they were told it was their duty. That is not nothing...but it is so hard not feel hopeless sometimes.
We are so far beyond political party, why is it that some people cannot see that? _________________ I demand euphoria! |
