Oh this could be a fun summer
I'm just looking forward to the libs screaming at each other that Hillary/Obama (take your pick) stole the election
Will Denver '08 bring up memories of Chicago '68?
It will if a group called Re-create 68 have anything to say about it. The group is promising "demonstrations that will rival those at the bloody 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago" at the August's Democratic National Convention in Denver, according to the Rocky Mountain News.
The Re-create 68 Alliance is upset that a permit for the Civic Center, a "spacious plaza" that "has been used for major public events and celebrations representing the diversity and cultural heritage of Colorado and Denver," according to the city of Denver's Web site, went to the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee following a redraw for permits during the convention.
"When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don’t blame us for that," Glenn Spagnuolo, an organizer for the group, told the News.
The Host Committee points out that it is not the same as the Democratic National Committee, but Re-create 68 says Democrats are "trying to silence dissent in the city of Denver

| I really hope that there is no violence if it should come down to Hillary beating out Obama. I hope it doesn't turn out to be like the LA riots after the Rodney King verdict. That was an awful site. One in which I hope I never see again. It is embedded in my memory bank forever. I would hope that you wouldn't want to see anything like that happen again either Munch, but the way it sounds, that is what you are waiting on. I hope I'm wrong. |

I don't think it will; I still feel like the only people making this issue so much about race are the ones reporting from Fox News. I'm still reading about how much of the African-American population continues to support Hillary (particularly women) and that Obama's mixed background doesn't really incite the same sort of racial prejudice of say, I don't know, the Rodney King beating.
It's certainly a different time, but reading the article, it's not something that even seems worth mentioning... especially if you're not from Denver? The "Convention Host Committee" gave a permit to democrats and republicans are upset about it?

The nerve of Fox News for reporting the facts about Obama and his mentor
Obama has now changed his story a couple of times. More racist comments have come out that Wright bellowed. Obama still stands by him
All of these facts are mere details to the Obama folks. The same standards they hold Republicans to are checked at the door as they enter the Church of Obama and bow at the alter of Obama |

Since when was this pastor Obama's mentor? It's pretty clear that Wright is neither an advisor or mentor to Obama.
To think, some people don't subscribe to everything their pastor says. Seems we need more politicians who don't rule our country through the divine intervention of God. |

Oh please Coppy. Obama himself called Wright his mentor and spritial advisor
Looking at the reaction from the crowd, the people in the Church suscribe to what the nut screamed. Obama was there for 20 years - so I suspect he does as well |

The more I look into this, the more I realize that maybe this sort of anger from the black community isn't completely unjustified.
I've been looking into a lot of this since it all blew up and, I don't know, maybe it's my liberal elitism or me being out of touch with the average American, but this anger and this sentiment toward our government and how it's treated the black community is pretty widespread.
Maybe I'm just not one of those "if you don't like it then leave" types of people. I'm not saying that this guy isn't a nut or what he said is justified; it's not, it really does add to the problem.
But I refuse to buy into this "racist by association" thing. I don't buy it. |

Which is great and certainly the point that Obama tried to make. Then again, the black community also represents a hugely disproportionate number of the impoverished and incarcerated. It's easy to blame them for that, but when you're the majority, it's pretty easy to do whatever you want. And when you look at the facts, it really is difficult for black youth to break a vicious cycle.

Would the problems the black population has have anything to do with out of wedlock births?
Father dumping their families?
Failing schools in which Dems deny them a chance to get out of their schools? Not taking advantage of a good school when they are in one?
More blacks are in jail because they commit the crimes - oh I am being a racist for posting that comment

Coppy, you might apprecaite this - from Jonathan Alter in this week's Newsweek:

Instead of being jeered, he was cheered wildly.
Obviously, not all black adults and children would suddenly start doing exactly what President Obama tells them. As he said in his Philadelphia speech, he's not naive enough to believe that one politician will transform American attitudes. But it must make at least some difference when Obama tells African-American audiences, as he did this year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, that they need to stop being homophobic and anti-Semitic. This is powerful stuff and would make him an important president even if his legislation stalled. |
I think it's best for black folks to address the issues in their community that they have control of - poor health, drug use, or whatever it is. And white folks should work on those things under white control that disproportionately negatively impact the black community - unjust sentencing guidelines, institutional and individual racism, and so on.
Obama seems serious about trying to find a solution, and, of anyone on the national stage currently, it sounds like he's uniquely equipped to do it. |
