i got my place for cheap. and when i had a mortgage, it was only $349...much cheaper than renting so that's why i bought (plus i'd rather own than rent)...the cost of living there is lower too, which is nice. plus, while i'm in frankin county (cumberland is literally across my street) i get the benefits of borough (gas, trash, recycling, etc)

Maybe... I spent my high school years in the area and I actually liked the Camp Hill Mall. The things was, it never tried to be a real mall. Capitol City was the real mall, and it was literally one exit down; it has steadily grown ever since I lived up there.
The Camp Hill Mall when i was there was an actual, enclosed mall but without your typical "mall" stores. It was sort of the quiet, take a stroll mall with local businesses like art stores, outdoor stores and a cool food court with all non-chain type places.
Soon, Boscovs bought a large portion of the mall itself and soon it was turned into more of an outdoor shopping center with a Barnes & Noble, and other box stores. It's really very nice though, a lot different than I remember.
The Harrisburg East Mall (prior to renovations) was nice but there was a racial divide that literally scared local white people who all went to the Colonial Park Mall. That's kind of the sad story of Harrisburg and the East/West Shores but I think it's improved significantly, perhaps since you've lived there Paul. I'd say crime is lower now than it was 10 years ago in the Harrisburg area and that development has really improved much of the area. Now, renamed Harrisburg Mall, is a much nicer place.
Harrisburg also has the Regal (Loews?) Theater off Progress Ave (pronounced PRO-gress) and the Camp Hill Cinemaplex which are both fairly new with stadium seating and lots of great, modern theaters. Capitol City and Colonial Park have both improved their theaters as well, as far as I know. |

it took me about 30 minutes to get to carlisle on a normal driving day...it think the mileage was 23 miles from my house if i recall...gas was about $30/week....which is what i have now driving the other way to hagerstown (but w/the sight uppage of gas cost, my $30/week is now $35 and i have a jeep now not the cavalier i drove to carlisle...which isn't bad). i didn't mind the drive at all. i would alternate between york and hanover exits, depending on traffic flow. |

I The whole racial thing is true, I have friends in Harrisburg who will still not shop at East Mall. I worked in Mechaniscburg from 1988-2006 and if our store did not have something we would tell them that the HGB store did and they would be like " I am not crossing the river to shop" They use to call the West Shore the White Shore. Yes I remember when we called the Camp Hill mall the Boscov's Mall because boscov's became half of what the mall use to be. |

I have a Honda 4cc but our jobs are going to be in Harrisburg. Now my wife is Bi-Lingual and I am told that there is a growing Hispanic population in Chambersburg so she might be able to find a job in Chambersburg. |

Here is what I hate, we want the safety of a Shipp and small town feel, but we dont want to spend $300.00 a month in gas. So what do I give up, saftey or learn to budget better? |

here's my advice....
go to the store, either walmart or target. preferably target.
go to the electronics department and puchase the following:
1) World of Warcraft
2) World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (expansion set)
then, drive home and install.
you will never, ever leave the house again and you will save SO MUCH MONEY...JUST LIKE ME!!!!!!!!
