Are there movies out there that any of you consider essential viewing?

Why?

Did it represent your ideals completely? Or did it speak to you in such a way that you felt called to action (whether or not you actually, you know, acted) Does it propel you into a state of childlike wonder, or does it just allow you to get lost in the action, shaking off the stresses of reality?

One of my favorites in "The Long Kiss Goodnight" with Gena Davis & Samuel L Jackson. Have you ever seen two people so beat up in any movie? I think it is one of Jackson's best.

HA!

I like that movie as well. My friends just shake their heads and tell me it's cheesy. Of course, I don't think I could ever pick just one movie, so props to you for that.

If cheese and sleaze is what one's looking for I'd suggest "Cannibal the Musical" or "Pink Flamingos"...basically any John Waters, early Trey Parker/Matt Stone movie or Troma Production; "Redneck Vampires" is a classic 'D' movie Laughing

Haha, really? Because Snakes on a Plane was seriously Oscar worthy and I don't see how the Academy could possibly pass it up.

Snakes on a plane was quite the comedy. Unfortunately, I don't think it was supposed to be funny.

I like meaningless movies that you can go to the frige and not miss some fine point that defines the entire movie. Movies that you can watch over & over.

Some movies, like Saving Private Ryan, are good but I just can't seem to watch it again.

I completely agree. I've actually seen Saving Private Ryan twice, but don't watch it anymore.

I refuse to watch Black Hawk Down again...or Ol' Yeller, I just can't.

On the other hand there are some movies that I don't get tired of:

Full Metal Jacket
Breakfast Club
Harold and Maude
Nightmare before Christmas
Serial Mom

And some, I need to take a break before my love reblooms: Razz

Song of the South
Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
Se7en
Sean of the Dead
Orgasmo
Cannibal the Musical
John Water's Hairspray

>The above lists are not complete and are in no particular order<
I could name a whole lot more, but how about I give someone else a turn...

You have EXCELLENT taste!! And might i add Mel Brooks is a Movie God
The original Fantasia is another of my favorites except for Mickey's appearances. Night on Bald/horned(whatever) Mountain is my absolute fave of all!!

I remembered another that has not been mentioned >>Heavy Metal. But the sequel or second attempt I can't even watch all the way through.

I am surprized that you didn't highlight Silent Movie and Dracula: Dead and Loving It, as they too, were Mel Brooks movies. I would have added History of the World Part 1, The Producers, and High Anxiety, but I didn't want to look too prejudice. I am also a fan of Zucker, Zucker and Abrahams. Ode to slapstick! Or is Brooks case, Ode to slap stchick.

i can't wait to see no country for old men. I read the book a few weeks ago, and was just telling my girlfriend how much I liked it and Cormac McCarthy. To think that the Coen brothers are releasing a film version now (should be more like Barton Fink and O' Brother Where Art Thou, than Big Lebowski - my favorite) just makes my day. They are the perfect people to do a movie version, I don't think I'd be nearly as excited if anyone else was doing this project.

I guess my movie list would be different.

I like the Die Hards, Lethal Weapons, those Eddie Murphy hollywood cop movies, Arnold movies, Twister, etc. Then there's Quigley Downunder & , one of the funniest movies there is "My Alibi". Every 4th of July there's ID4.

Not much of a musical person.

Dave,
I like all the Die Hards, the first few Lethal Weapons, Road Warrior (the other Mad Max movies were okay) Indiana Jones ...I can't WAIT for the latest I. Jones to come out.
Independence Day is a pretty good one. I like Men in Black too

Leathal Weapon? I've seen 'em all! How about Beverly Hills Cop, with Eddie Murphy? Those were pretty funny. I loved Bronson Pinchot's character in the first one.

(I love Danny Glover in whatever he plays in!!!)

In Beberly Hills Cop II, the scene where Rosewood gets out his long coat & arsenal is great.

This series has great characters.

In Lethal Weapon 2, the Drive thru scene always gets me laughing.
